Extent of TPS OHMS
If you have your tps off of the car and in hand and are testing for resistance.. when the plunger is completely pressed what should it read? and when the plunger is completely depressed what should it read? Mine reads when pressed: 1k OHM and about 8k OHM depressed.. is this correct? or should the pressed be less than 1k OHM?

It should be able to read under 1000 when pressed and no more than 6000 when the plunger has no pressure on it.
plunger IN: ~700 ohms Plunger OUT: 5000 ohms =/- 1000 ohms, no more, no less. By the way, depress and press are synonomous. Thus, when you describe yours as pressed and depressed, you are describing two resistance values for the same conditions. depress does not equal.... unpress(?) |
at about 30% it reads 100% on my safc. Is there a dead spot in my tps?

Its' s5, after it reads 100% it goes back down to 50% or so and starts going up to 100% again.

It's pretty consistant but when it shows on the safc, it fluctuates a lot.

When I first got my '91 the TPS was bad.
I took it off to check it and the ohmmeter showed a sweep from 600 to 5K, but with a drop out at 2K. I sprayed some CRC "QD Contact Cleaner" between the barrel & sleeve. I worked it in & blew it out several times. It now works like new. The Home Depot electrical Dept has the cleaner. It's also good for door lock switches, logicon sliders, stereo switches & pots, connector plugs, etc. |
so.. again, with the plunger completely pressed in, the ohms should be below 1k? cause mine wont go below 1k but it has a perfectly smooth transition up to about 8k.. when its ON the car it stops at 5k. the factory service manual says nothing about being below 1k.. so do they go below 1k or not?

What he's indicating is to spray the cleaner into the area where the plastic plunger slides into. In other words down along side the plunger to clean internal contacts.

FSM says 1Kohms approx. (idle position)
5Kohms+-1Kohms when depressed since yours bottoms at 1Kohms, you may have difficulty adjusting it properly in the car, but it may be ok. Look at the voltage at the tps plug when engine is hot and running at idle. Adjust it to 1V and you're done. Since you have checked there are no dead spots in the plunger travel using your ohm-meter, that's really all that's needed to set your TPS correctly. hugues - |

Hey maybe check your ohmmeter?
You TPS may be good. |
got a new tps.. goes from 0 to 6k ohms.. for anyone who references this post, if your tps starts at 1k replace it.

I'd give a try cleaning it first.
Then if it still fails, replace it. |
