exploding muffler!!

ok guys, I just got this rx7 and it was not running at the time I bought it. so i bought a fuel pump, removed the hard lines that were clogged, did the emmisions removal. went to start it after a couple of minutes of turning over it fired up, but the cat got red hot in 3 mins or less. So i took out the cat hollowed it out put it back on. went to start it up again and it back fired really loud and blew up one of the mufflers, but ran the same just louder. We then removed the #2 rotors plug wires and it ran better without back firing. I have no idea what is going on. Hellp

Thanks in advance!

sounds blown. compression test the rear housing. does it feel slow? make any odd noises? you shouldnt expand the NA exhaust other than the Y pipe if its an s4.

hurleysurf24 Apr 29, 2007 10:34 PM

your shit was probably just rusted to hell and the increased flow bursted through the muffler

cabonrx7 Apr 29, 2007 11:10 PM

It is an s4 and the throttle responce is really slow (NOT DRIVEABLE) . The exaust pings and back fiers alot at a low rpm. Thats what caused the muffler to blow but the only reason I hollowed out the cat is because it turned red hot in like 5min of warming up. The car won't idel eather ??????????????? Im very puzzeled would like some educated advise because the stupid muffler dident exploud because it was rusted and I reamed the cat out I mean what the hell????? lol

TehMonkay Apr 29, 2007 11:19 PM

Compression test it first, if the compression is ok then do a tune up.

cabonrx7 Apr 29, 2007 11:26 PM

Yes, the spark plugs look good, good wiers, and the coils all fier so i dont think it needs a tuneup. I am doin a compreshion test soon!!!!! Then if its blown im goin to need a turbo top mount any sugesstions????????? I really hope I can get this motor to run for now. It really back fiers loud alot though. need help please?

TehMonkay Apr 29, 2007 11:49 PM

Easy way to test is just pull out one of the spark plugs on the rear rotor and have someone else crank it, if you get 3 constant puffs you know it isnt blown(but you dont know much else either) test the same thing on the front, if the compression is bad(you don't get 3 constant chugs on f and r rotors) then take off your exhaust manifold and look to see if the seals are actually blown or if its carbon locked.

Also, if you can park on a hill, try and roll down the hill without disengaging the clutch with the car off, let it roll a little then let the clutch out, the engine will try and stop the car from rolling from the force from the compression cycle, these(hiccups) as you're rolling down the hill should come one after the other without any pauses inbetween, if there is, you have bad compression.

I am a noob to the rotary scene, what would a good and a bad seal look like? need all the info i can get. Any sugestions?

TehMonkay Apr 30, 2007 12:42 AM

It should look like its in one piece, lol, if its jagged or completely missing its bad, lol.

cabonrx7 Apr 30, 2007 01:22 AM

thanks bud, if its blown I think ill just take a loan out for a turbo2 front clip?205hp @ the flywheel, good idea or not? that is the qwestion, lol

Thanks for your in put =)

Umm.. check the timing..

cabonrx7 Apr 30, 2007 01:41 AM

how do you time a roatary motar???????? My friend told me if the timeing is too far off it will blow a roatary motar right away? it could be timeing that was my first guess when i heard the poping/backfiering and im a rotary noob.

please advise me

TehMonkay Apr 30, 2007 02:49 AM

There are timing marks on the main pulley and there is a pin on the front cover it should line up with.Just hook the timing light to the front leading coil point and shoot. You can adjust by loosening the bolt on the CAS and turning the cas.

You really don't need a front clip for a TII swap, if you look in the FAQ and in the archive there is plenty of information about it. I definately reccomend going through the FAQ first. You can get a TII engine/trans for around $1300 on ebay then you can source a roller for drivetrain parts etc. If you have a base model youll want to upgrade to 5 lug with the bigger brakes etc.

Where is ferndale?

cabonrx7 Apr 30, 2007 09:21 AM

Its in washington north of seattel.

cabonrx7 Apr 30, 2007 09:47 AM

I am not really worryied bout the 5 lug swap, but the front clip comes with t2 hood, front bumper and fenders which i need and its the only way to get everything from tiger japanice.com including the ECU. And it comes with the right hand drive shit just in case i want to change that which i cool. And I heard not to trust the e bay motars. So i think Ill just spend the 2200 dallors unless you have a better idea. If you just buy the engine from tiger japanees.com you get a cut wiering harness and no ECU whats up with that? Need to find a cheeper sorce if avalible. Any recomendations???????????????/

http://fnf-motors.com/
thats where I got mine, it has the list of stuff that comes with it.
you'll need to buy new motor mounts, full turbo back exhaust, the drive shaft from Mazdatrix and a TII hood unless you go FMIC. Bigger brakes, better fuel pump, but these are stuff you don't need right away other then the hood motor mounts exhaust and drive shaft.

Those are of my engine so far.
there are pics of the exhaust too. Didn't have time to get some of drive shaft or hood.

Good luck.

TehMonkay Apr 30, 2007 11:55 AM

Really you don't even need to get anything from japan you can just get it here it's pretty much all about the same.

s4Lt Apr 30, 2007 12:36 PM

I could have sworn I read somewhere that the Japan (manufactured) engines were better then the US (manufactured) engines...could be wrong though.

djmtsu Apr 30, 2007 12:45 PM

Wrong. In fact if he gets the JDM front clip, the engine harness will not work (not without lengthening it at least.) Also most JDM engines are junk by the time they arrive here and at least need a rebuild.

Read the FAQ, you need to.

One thing you might check just because I know (from experience, unfortunately) it can cause problems like the sluggishness you've described- make sure your plug wires are all going to the right plugs- I had the trailing plugs swapped on mine initially and it caused all sorts of sluggishness. Once I got them on the right rotors it ran beautifully.

speed_monkey Apr 30, 2007 01:25 PM

heh, your muffler blew up too?
here's mine
