Explain Everything about Premix....

I did a search on premix and didnt find what I was looking for. If someone could explain to me what Premix is, how its used, what modifications (specifics) I need to perform on my engine to use. I dont really need to know advantages of premix, just what it is and how I use it........

dr0x 01-26-03 03:14 PM

Its 2 stroke oil put in the gas tank. You pour it in the gas tank when you fill up w/ gas. Generally some ppl remove the omp so there isnt motor oil going into the combustion chamber. Some people leave it and use premix. Premix burns cleaner than motor oil, and lubricates better.

Ted does a good job on explaining this. http://fc3s-pro.com/TECH/FAQ/premix.htm

djaaronp 01-26-03 08:44 PM

great link. Now......where is the OMP? :D and what do I need to do to it?

CrackHeadMel 01-26-03 08:52 PM

its on the lower left side on the front plate of the engine if your looking at the front

if your going to run premix, you can

1, leave it and just put 2stroke oil in your tank and, this is the easiest
2. remove the omp, and run 2stroke oil in your tank at every fillup. if your car has an electric omp, this becomes more complicated, and i cant answer you questions on the topic

if you do remove your omp, you have to make a blockoffplate, its pretty selfexplanatory

BlackRx7 01-26-03 11:58 PM

seriously though if your OMP is working correcly and you useing regular dyno oil, not sythetic, then you really don't need to run premix, if you wanna clean your internals use a little ATF mixed in with the gas....After reading Teds site I tend to lean alittle for premixing but my mechanic has show my rotors and rotor housing useing the stock oil injection well maintained, and its not very bad at all......My concern is adding premix to your gas lowers the octane....and in my TII running high boost I need all the combustion retardent I can get...plus I'm a poor college student and is struggling to pay prices of Premium gas (1.67) but if someone can convince me that its an ingsinificant drop I just may fit it inot my budget...

dr0x 01-27-03 12:02 AM

Dude, you are adding like 16oz to the tank. The octane isnt going to drop that much. Plus, motor oil injected by the omp isnt going to cover 100% of the parts, it doesnt burn as clean.

ATF in your gas? wtf are you smoking?

BlackRx7 01-27-03 12:33 AM

just like put atf in the spark pulg holes, just a slower cleaning process..... I wanna see some numbers, I mean I buy 93 for a reason, if not I'd buy 91, or even 87....

djaaronp 01-27-03 10:19 AM

anyone got a pic of the OMP?

djaaronp 01-27-03 10:20 AM

or a pic of where its located?

BlackRx7 01-27-03 01:37 PM

I'm at school right now I should have a pic when I get home, its lower than the front pully and to the left of it, what year is your car? if you have an 86-88 then you will see a metal rod going from the OMP connecting to the throttle linkage infront of the upper intake manifold, you shouldn't be able to miss it unless its covered in grime, which it prolly is, you should also beable to see the the oil line coming off of it..

All this info is great!

...now heres some newbie questions:

whats ATF?

and is there anything wrong with running injector cleaner? or do i need something specific to rotaries?

Automatic Transmission Fluid.

Some people on here use it as a magical engine cleaner...;)

Diavolo 01-27-03 02:04 PM

damn you guys will put anything in the gas tank!

i meant running it through the motor, by means of pouring it in the gas tank, hmm i guess i could use gasoline? i clean parts with that sometimes, i guess ill try putting some of that in my tank. ;)

Yes atf in your gas. The question isnt what we are smoking the question is why arent you smoking it?:) It cleans your whole fuel system slowly as not to clog injectors etc. It lowers your octane yes but not by much ( i run it and have run it for years in my 90). In such small quantities it burns pretty clean. I dont run it every tank though.

Diavolo 01-27-03 02:06 PM

what is ATF!?!?!?

BlownMotor 01-27-03 02:18 PM

Read above! ATF is Automatic Transmission Fluid.

Aaron Cake 01-27-03 03:31 PM

I'm sorry, but I just can't believe this topic. There is so much information on premix on this forum that ANY search should find more then you need. For example, to answer the quesions you asked, take a look at these threads (turned up in a search for "premix"):

What premix to use: https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...ghlight=premix
Random premix info:
https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...ghlight=premix

Advantages/disadvantages of premix:
https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...ghlight=premix

Best premix:
https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...ghlight=premix'

And that was only the first page.

As for mixing ATF into your gas tank, that's just plain stupid. Your fuel system is NOT DESIGNED to handle a fluid such as ATF, and all it will do is clog the fuel filter, injectors and (if you have them) your catalytic converters. If you must put something in your fuel tank besides fuel, use injector cleaner.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the "ATF trick" is evil! http://www.aaroncake.net/rx-7/atrtrick.htm

eViLRotor 01-27-03 04:33 PM

Link is actually:

BlackRx7 01-27-03 06:38 PM

okay so if atf absorbs gas then how does it clogg the fuel filter and fuel injectors? won't premix do the same...

dr0x 01-27-03 06:57 PM

Premix is designed to mix with gasoline. ATF is not. I wish people would stop putting ATF in their motors.

Mazda designed the rx7 to run on 87. Id use it unless you have raised the boost (at like 8-10psi Id use 89).

BlackRx7 01-27-03 07:08 PM

Really, you wanna show me a TII manual that says that? plus I'm running 12psi plus!

eViLRotor 01-28-03 08:38 AM

The manual to my 87 TII says 91 Octane. My old 86 GXL manual said 87.
