Exhaust System explanation please?

Hey everyone. I know this is some pretty basic information that Im looking for, so, bear with me and help me cure my ignorance.

Im looking for information on exhaust systems. Mainly, which parts are worth replacing. Here is my situation, 88 vert. I want to do exhaust and intake. Now, financially I can't afford to buy the entire system at one time, so, is there any piece I should buy first and what order from there on. Or, should I wait and buy the whole system when I can afford it all.

Now a little more technical question(s). What does each piece in the exhaust do for your engine performance. The header, downpipe, what is a presilencer, etc. all the way back. Is there one piece which will give me more of a HP boost than any of the others? Is is possible to purchace each piece seperatly and still have the engine and exhaust system function well? What kind of HP gain could I expect to get from a full exhaust system from header to muffler?

If anyone wants to post some other information that you think I would benefit from knowing, by all means, please do. Thanks for your help!

The first piece I would recommend buying is a kitty cat they make a nice purr when you rev them, and having one smaller kitty is better than the 3 alley cats you have on the car now. Not to mention it'll definately help you in the quest for power. If you have the money buy a catback too. My own personaly opinion is don't buy a header, IT WILL add power to your car, but at the cost of a nasty sound IMHO. If you think you can deal with the sound (louder, but not piercing...just nasty), then go for it especially if you goal is to have ultimate power. I think the high flo cat (get the bonez one...rx7.com) is the best route to go personally since you gain good power, sound, and stay legal. The catback doesn't make power for you, it just changes the sound...well unless you get a restrictive one which will affect your power (common misconception is that they make power...no they just rob it by being restrictive).

Upgrading the exaust system on our cars is by far the easiest way to add the most power for the money. Yeah its gonna be a little costly but youll be so pleased with it afterwords. I know i am. I was in the same situation as you when i first bought my FC, and what i did was simple, Reaserch. Your gonna have to figure out whats best for your system, what goals you have and above all esle how much your looking to spend.
Basically theres no easy way to answere your questions, All i can say is i would save my money and get the system as a whole, and dont cheap out try to get the best for the money and fist and foremost do research. Check out that search button at the top of this forum, VERY USEFULL;)

Thanks fellas. Thanks for the positive feedback. I will probably keep the header, but replace from header to y-pipe with the Racing downpipe with presilencer (i dont care if its legal, they dont really care that much here in Texas, cept on inspection) and then a cat back from there. Can anyone make a good suggestion on a good catback, since there are so many to choose from. I would like one with a good tone, not too terribly loud, a little loud is ok, but with good performance? thanks again

Kinda hard to say...I like the stock look of the RX7.com exhaust (bonez), but I also heard the Racing Beat exhaust is very nice (which would've been my second choice).
