exhaust pipe temp handling
i have a 87 N/A this up coming weekend im going to take all 3 cats off and put a 2.5 all the way back with one OBX B9 muffler. not sure yet it i will keep the duel or not. either way
im using the exhaust pipes you can purchase at pep boys that fit in each other. also there they have mendrel bent piping there that you can bent your self. im not talking about the kind you use to fix exhaust leaks. you have to use a bar to bend it. knowing how hot our exhaust gets will thses pipes hold up ? im only using the mendrel bent pipe causei want to angle the exhaust a certain way. shops around here wont do the work unless it has cats so i am doing it myself. i have a tig welder and saws to i should be able to do a nice job. what happens if the pipe get to hot? do they explode ? please let me know. i figured with taking the cats of and making it flow better it would stay cooler. i wanna keep the car safe as well as me and the passengers. please let me know thanks andy |
ghetto fabb-boulous

nothing will happen....it wont explode....and it will sound like shit...then once the muffler goes..

at pep boys they have exhaust pipes there that are in i believe 3-5 feet sections. has ribbles in it , you can take a crow bar or something like a bar stick it down the tube and you can bent the tube to a ceratin type of degree. i know they have the fix it up exhaust pipes that you can purchase in those little boxes.
maybe ill jsut go to napa or jegs and purchase better exhaust pipe sence you all saying the pep boys stuff is crap. if i pain the exhaust pipe after welding it, with high temp paint like engine paint, will that make it last longer. keep it from rusting? thanks |
When you add up the cost of all the parts, you may be better off to find a local muffler shop that's not fussy about tossing you old cats in the trunk. (yup, they're still on the car - sorta)
I bought the header kit from Mazdatrix and had a local shop weld it up full dual with 2 silencers & 2 bombs for $300 total. There is an FTP link in my sig below. |
i want to do it myself that way i can agle the muffler the way i want it. all the shops around here have sings up that they will not remove emission devices.
i like doing projects myself anyways. i guess i ll spent 40 bucks getting some nice pipes from jeggs or perhaps napa. i have a y pipe from jegs already but i need the other muffler i still havent decided on duel or not. two muffler without cats might reallly be loud so i may stay with one to quite the noice down a bit. thanks again anyone else got some good info? |
If you are going to do this, do not buy steel tubing. Anything crush bent is also crap, so you'll probably have to look farther then your local shop. Try Summit Racing or Jegs. Both of them sell stainless tube and bends. If you do everything in stainless, rust will not be a concern for many years.
Painting will have no effect since exhausts rust from the inside-out. |
These people have nice stuff, not as cheap as getting something local tho.
