I cleaned up my intake today. It wasn't really dirty, but the TB inlets were a little bit residued. I B12 Chemtooled and Steel Wooled them and VIOLA!!! Opened the butterflies and hosed B12 into them. I also took Steel Wool to my TB elbow's inside. Needless to say, my car ran ALOT better than it did before. So everyone go do it, NOW! Those of you with turbo's and hard-pipe IC's and whatnot, CLEAN THAT ****!!! You won't be dissappointed.

BTW: Beware of Steel Wool splinters. They suck. Wear gloves.

 

Oh, also lube up your throttle linkage to make that **** smoother.

What a revelation people, clean throttle plates and lubed up linkages work better....

And while you have all that out, port, portmatch, polish!

Make sure the gaskets are all in good condition, and you people with N/As, check your aux ports! If they work, lube them!

Polishing isnt worth the time imo, but definitely port.

 

I had trouble getting into the UIM and LIM ports to clean out the residue... I mean I just dumped them in a sink of degreaser and let them soak for a while, but I never really did get to clean the inside of the tubes very well.

Any tricks?

 

Other than that, all I've ever done is use a hose to spray out each port afterwards and then use compressed air to blow through it. Then let it dry for a day.

 

Use a baby bottle brush. I might just end up doing that this weekend. I have to anyways because I have to remove some automatic **** left over.

No, don't lube the TB. It is designed to operate properly without any lubrication. If you spray lube all over it, dirt and dust will stick to the lube and bind up the TB parts; the opposite of what you were trying to achieve. All you have to do is thoroughly clean the TB with something that doesn't leave a residue, like carb cleaner.

 

carb cleaner does leave a residue.. use a brake cleaner like brakleen

you don't want oil-base lubricants on things that don't require lubricating (er...duh), especially things that could get clogged up with dirt like the TB...

if you really want you can try a graphite based lube, but i don't know if that is a good thing either?

 

I dont see a point in lubeing the thing.

 

You are right, but you might as well choose the texture while you are in there, it is not that much more effort.

And if you have a hardcore race car, you want a mirror finish on the thing. (well, exept neer the secondary injectors, but that is another story) for sheer top-end flow.

If you have a street car, you want it to be rather rough inside, especially around and after the secondaries.

Mine, I scuffed up nice and rough on the inside, rougher around the injectors, and mirror polish for the aux ports.

Certain places around the bends could profit from always being a mirror finish, but the difference is absalutely irrelivent IMO.

No, it doesnt make that much of a difference. But it does matter, and it is not like it costs you anything more then a little time.

 

I hosed it down with B12 after, so NO MO' GREASYNESS!!!
