Every shift at 7 rpm's it backfires

Just recently I installed some NGK spark plugs and wires, bout a 100 dollar ticket. There definetly decent, but what i noticed was after I installed them, whenever i shifted around 6 or 7 rpm's I would backfire. Im kinda stoked it does it and in a way im not cause it does make me feel like my cars a beater.

Spark plugs and wires are for sure installed correctly along with the wires, I have checked into it.

Also my beeper for when you shift at high rev's doesnt go off, whats wrong here?

i take it you have a N/A , well they will tend to do that a lot since N/A run rich as it is so no worries bro just try to keep yourself below those 7 -8k rpms or you will be posting next my car wont turn on and it just wooshes...lol

Eva001Ikari 01-28-07 02:20 AM

hahaha, yep.... not just non turbo rx7's do that my cousin has a turbo that backfires..........i'd like to say all rx7's do that but its not true, anyway yes rotaries sorta suck at burning fuel stock so its going to backfire if you just leave it like that, as for the redline buzzer i have no idea, and like he said, try to stay outa the 6-8k range unless its absolutely necessary.........u know necessary to have fun and stuff

staticguitar313 01-28-07 02:42 AM

cars with more open exhausts or possibly malfunctioning Anti-afterburn valves will cause backfires on high RPM shifts

ohayou88 01-28-07 02:49 AM

my car started backfiring after i went from stock to cat-replacement,presilencer, corksport catback, I shouldn't really worry should I? It just doesn't make backfire noise it actually makes flames. I saw it one night when my rearview mirror turned bright orange-yellow on a dark onramp

micah 01-28-07 02:56 AM

Your redline buzzer doesn't go off? Are you sure its your redine buzzer and not your oil buzzer? Any lights on your warning cluster come on?

Sounds like you have more going on than backfiring. :) Time for a tune-up?

Be proud. But also be careful or police.

yea. one day i was getting on the freeway pretty hard and right at 5k i saw the cop car below me on the left and instantly let off. that was a close one

tooslow7 01-28-07 03:38 AM

sorry to jack the thread. but speaking of cops. one day when i had my 7(it was a buddys at the time) i was at our local cruise spot ran through 1st till right before the rev limiter(7800) and snagged 2nd. in addition to kickin sideways it popped a huge flame, right in front of a cop. the funny part is he pulled me over to tell me how cool it looked. he then said he had been looking for a decent 7 for years. haha it was great

When I first bought the car, the owner said the Coolant light stays on 24/7. He's right because coolant is definetly topped. Other than that no other lights are on.

dizflyaznboi 01-28-07 03:29 PM

make sure you have a coolant level sensor, thats why your light stays on. My s5 na does the same thing he disabled the buzzer so it woudlnt always go off.

drain your coolant, and refill it properly.

YaNi 01-28-07 05:48 PM

Not to hijack this thread, but if fuel tuning was used (standalone, safc, rtec, etc) to lean out the top end would it cut down on the backfiring?

micah 01-28-07 09:50 PM

In theory.. yes.

Will N/A's do this without a catalytic converter as well?

Also, is it illegal (as in a cop can/will pull you over) to have flames launching out your exhaust (officially) ?

TehMonkay 01-28-07 11:31 PM

Remove the bleeder screw from the radiator where the upper radiator hose is connected to and top off the coolant until it comes out of the hole, then reinstall the screw and fill up to the top of the filler neck.

I imagine if you had a standalone that was fast enough and was programmed right it could help, but it's too cool to try and get rid of. I saw some guy with a 3000GT making his exhaust do that once when i had no exhaust on my RX-7, shot a huge flame out of underneath my car and let out a huge boom, he stopped after I did that. I think I pretty much neutered him by doing it.

I've heard it also has to do with overlap.

kapn krunch 01-28-07 11:36 PM

my car does this also i have a slightly modded ignition and after two or three 7k pulls it will shoot a flame out i like i just try and avoid doing it to often to avoid the attention

Yes. A lot of people get cool cops like in the story above that will pull you just for a conversation, but by the books a flaming exhaust is definitely not street legal.

Somehow I always get the mean cops. A month ago I was pulled at 11:30 at night by a very bored cop -- I was doing 47 in a 45, and he wrote me a ticket for 66. I swear I only get in trouble when I'm actually driving like a soccor mom; I never get noticed when I've got the car sideways.

tooslow7 01-29-07 12:23 PM

haha that blows..its happened to me also. i guess its because our cars LOOK so fast you must have fooled his rader into thinkin you were goin 66 lol

sik7ven 01-29-07 12:27 PM

my car does the same thing when i had my stock pipes, i removed my cats and installed a bonez downpipe and every time 7k BOOM i used to have huge flames not to mention the shotgun sound the car used to make. Now I installed the racing beat true dual set up and it still back fires at 7grand but now i have smaller blue flames and the sound isnt so loud anymore. Its just an rx7 thing

RoTa7 01-29-07 04:22 PM

no its not ur car is broken..sell it to me :hah:

TheAbsence 01-29-07 11:48 PM

Do only the turbo'd 7's spit flames?

fc3sna 01-30-07 12:31 AM

no na's spit flames too. i have a true duel set up straight pipe with monza mufflers(yeah i know they suck, and i think their burnt out) and my car makes little flames here and there and its not a loud pop or any thing just a loud torch sound like a gas grill when you first start it and i makes that woush sound mines like that but a little louder. im planing on getting a racing beat prescilencer for the duel set up then im going to collect the exhaust after that almost at the rear of the car and put on a nice muffler.

darktritium 01-30-07 01:05 AM

While normal (non-RX-7 owners) people are shifting around 3 grand, we are hearing the redline buzzer and using that as our cue to shift. AWESOME.
