Engine swap, what mods to do while everything is out.

My mods are listed in my sig.

I just got my new rebuild from Kevin Landers today, it looks sick as hell its painted dark metallic blue alternating with metallic silver. The guy doing the swap for me doesnt have much experience with rotaries and he wants me to go and watch/help him with it, and he was wondering what kind of stuff to do while we have everything out. Cheap/free mods would be best as I already have to pay for the engine/shipping/install/walboro+boost gauge. I know I need to port my wastegate, to atleast 22-23mm. Im going to try to remove the rats nest, I got a walkthru that says you need some blockoff plate from mazdatrix.com, is that true or can you rig it up some other way. I also want to do the TB mod, does anyone have a link to a walkthru? I try searching for it and it says TB is too short a word, and throttle body mod comes up with nothing good. Hmm what else.... Oh yeah what will I have to do to my cats with the rats nest removed? Thats all for now, sorry for the long ramble. Ill post pics of the engine and stuff sometime next week.

Here is a link to the TB mod:
http://www.rx7turbo.com/tbmod.htm

If Ted's site was up, it'd be there too w/ a bunch of other useful stuff. :)

You don't have to buy the premade blockoff plates, but you have to block them off w/ something. If you can fab up your own, go for it. Just make sure they're sealed good to avoid vac leaks.

If you're removing rats nest, I'm assuming you're also removing all emissions since you asked about cats. If you remove the air pump, you're going to want to remove or at least gut your cats as they will clog otherwise.

Thanks trav. Anyone else got any more ideas of stuff I can do while I have the engine out?

Clean the engine bay. :) Not fun, but the best time to do it. Remove or cover everything you don't want to paint, and repaint the whole thing.

Also a good time to remove the OMP if you want to go to pre-mix...

umm take pics! as many as you can...

get a manual steering rack

and remove the A/C

Get rid of all the miscellaneous (now useless) brackets after you get rid of the stock airbox.

I would:
Flush Oil Cooler
Install New Oil Cooler Lines
Flush Radiator
All new Rubber hoses
Ensure shrouds and trays are clean and functioning
Have Injectors PROFESSIONALLY Cleaned
Clean and detail Engine Bay
Rewrap Engine harness, properly replace broken connectors

Rotorific 05-23-03 10:33 AM

hmm and how long will it take you to do the harness???? :)

As far as getting a manual steering rack...i disagree and say keep the power steering rack and block off the power steering. It is just as hard as a manual rack to turn and has a smaller ratio.

banzaitoyota 05-23-03 11:28 AM

I spent ~8-10 hours on NOTA944's Drivers side harness and Haltech harness tidying it up

Rotorific 05-23-03 11:35 AM

Well then... It might take them 8-10 hours tops to do the motor swap. Its worth it then again its not Just my view which isnt worth much

banzaitoyota 05-23-03 11:45 AM

I would rather chase wiring issues in a bare clean engine bay, the try to find them with everyting installed. We were also getting rid of unneeded wires due the East bear installation, Ac delete etc.

If its worth doing its worth doing right

TonyTurboII 05-23-03 11:52 AM

Replace the fuel filter. It easy to get to.
Swap to a manual sterring rack. I did.
Clean the engine bay.
Get rid of shit you dont need.
Get new oil cooler lines, better yet make your own.
Get new plug and wires.
Also, basically anything thats been said before, cause nows the time to do it.

Maybe replace the pusation dampner with a banjo bolt.. I second just removing the OMP and running premix but that's up to you..

KenshinFC 05-23-03 02:24 PM

IF you have money, upgraded flywheel and clutch would be nice. If you're going to remove all the emissions, buy a dual alternator belt pulley. Upgrade the radiator? replace all the hoses and the pulsation dampener.

Thanks for the replies guys. We are gonna start on everything next week, so Ill take pictures then. Wish me luck I hope everything works right. I don't really have much money to go replacing everything, I think im just gonna pull all the emissions, do the TB mod and and fix anything that needs replacement.

Just thought of one seeing another thread -- redo all of your grounds. Your electrical system (and you) will thank you for it.
