engine starts, now it wont stay on.. any help??

well it started with leaky injectors, swapped them out, then leaky hoses, that put clamp on those. whats wrong now is that my dad put the battery backwards and it shorted something out. it cranks and tries to turn on. in fact, it DOES turn on, but for a few seconds then dies. if i gave it gas while it was on, it would just die. we thought the fuel pump might not work. well we put direct power to it, and it works. so we hooked it back in and cranked it.. and fuel seems to be going into the car, so fuel isnt the problem. one thing i noticed.. not sure if its anything. but the tachometer on my gxl 86 doesnt dance when i crank it, dont know if thats normal or not. and my idiot lights dont come on, nor does the radio come on. we think its something electrical, maybe a relay. any help???! please!!

oh yea, my headlights pop up but dont come on... still cant figure it out, im stumped.

first things first, check all your fuses in the engine bay and near the kickplate. That's the cheapest and simplest solution. If its not fuses then you can worry.

coulda messed up your ecu, find one at a junkyard, its a easy steal

86gxl_fc 11-21-04 08:05 PM

ah crap, u serious??

86gxl_fc 11-21-04 08:57 PM

but wait, the ecu has nothing to do with my headlight right?.. and im just guessing, but it shouldnt have anything to do with the tach neighter.. right?

PureSephiroth 11-22-04 06:12 AM

you didn't mess up your ECU, that's bogus diagnosis. Just check your fuses then get back to us.

checked the fuses and they all are okay. i switched out my main relay/fuse yesterday cuz it was fried. besides that one i didnt see any others. i have this relay thing. dont know if its fried or not tho. im going to go to the store later and buy one and try it out see if that fixes it.

do all your idiot lights turn on when you turn the key to on?

86gxl_fc 11-22-04 12:29 PM

yea they do. my interior lights dont come on tho, well atleast the ones by the sunroof thing.
but the idiot lights do come on. oh and another ques. if you leave your key on the on position for awhile. do you get a buzz afterawhile? is there somethin else wrong with the car?like after a couple of minutes we leave the key on. the buzzer goes off. dont know if thats normal.

i still need help with this!... crap i dont get it. the only thing that i think it might be is a bunch of relays gone bad.. i bought the haynes manual book, and im lookin for the main fuel injection relays.. it says that its along the side of the driver side strut.. but i dont see it, i only see the starter relay.. any help would be appreciated guys!

Wicked_razor 11-23-04 12:53 PM

where did u get your injectors at? they could be the wrong impedance
mine did the same thing when i had s5 injectors in my s4

86gxl_fc 11-23-04 01:36 PM

well i ordered them from a friend that had a 7 in kansas. he was scrapping the car cuz he wrecked it. i made sure they were alike. its not the injectors tho. because we forced the car to run. i cranked it over, and it stays on for a sec then dies off.. so what me and my dad did was put power directly to the fuel pump. and the car ran like that for 10 minutes.. or however long we left it like that. its something electrical, i kno that much. i need to figure out where the fuel pump relay(if there is one) along with other relays, and the haynes manual isnt helping much.

alexdimen 11-23-04 02:01 PM

just so no one gets the wrong idea, you can put s5 injectors in some s4's... 88's without the module under the intake box. just need to crimp on the right connector.

follow the wiring harness and check every single plug is connected under the hood. i would also follow the troubleshooting guides in the fsm.

its not my injectors tho. because i kno they are working. the car actually comes on for a couple of seconds, and it feels as tho when i crank it, a relay sends the signal to the injectors to work, than once i stop cranking it turns on than just dies off.. kind of seems like the fuel is being cut off. so i think its a relay thats not working. just i dont kno where its it!..i need help! im frustrated..
