engine question

I was just going threw the paper work that came with my car. And I found out that when the engine blew (on the owner before my friend. Whom I bought the car off of) had got a new engine, and not a rebuild.

The car is an 1986 GXL

Now my question is, What are some ways to find out if maybe its an s5 n/a? cause the car seems a little faster then other s4 n/a's. the work on the car was done in 1998 at a local place here in Edmonton.

Are there v.i.n’s I can check or model numbers?

Thanks.
Kevin

you have an s4. s5's are 89 - 92.

why would they put in an s5 engine into an 86, they wouldnt. that would require some rewiring and such.

with your thinking why did they not put in a 13-rew motor, thats even newer and faster than "most other s4's"

its prob. faster because it has less miles on the engine and it has better compression.

how much did they charge for the new engine/ install- that would be your first clue...

Look at the oil metering pump on the lower passenger side of the front cover. If it has an electrical plug, then its a S5 motor. But like someone said before, its easier to replace the engine with another S4 engine instead of a new S5 engine, new engine wiring harness, and a new S5 ECU.

Seeing as you are also form edmonton impact, may I ask as to which shop the work was done at? would it have been rotary proformance? Just wondering because I also recently bought an rx-7 (TII) with a new motor in it.

u can also count the # of bolts that hold the upper radiator hose connecting peice. 2 bolt and its an S4, 3 bolt and its an s5. didnt s4's have metal connecting pieces as well??? the waterpump housing has 7 bolts that hold it onto the block, s4's have 6 (if memory serves me right).
