Nice site.

Nice car, looks like you had fun swapping the engine. The first one is always fun :) Did you do the rebuilld yourself? What was the trouble that came later?

The trouble that came latter was some sort of oil contamination. Not sure where the hell it came from. I have my theroys. I do not think my oil cooler was flushed out correctly. I think some crud was in there waiting to swim through my new engine. Dropped my oil pressure and did internal damage to the turbo and the engine. Had to send it back to Atkins. They warrentied the engine. Had to reinstall a new engine. Will have a few pictures on that latter.

i have similar pics. my engine came out on the first tug though :D can't wait for reassembly with a jspec to get it running again ;)

How the hell did you guys manage to stay so clean?

Bolt cutters?!!!!!!!!!! LOL Did you guys damage the heater core getting the heater lines off?

I'm 80% sure thinking that that big bolt is on the top of upper intake manifold by one of the IC bolts.

that big bolt looks like it could be the start bolt ? I dunno
but that is sweet.. I have the same bag!! in fact, the second rebuild it got fuller than before.. yea,, I think I even have one of the long engine torque bolts in there that holds the engine together :) haha

but it runs.. so it's all good :)

That long bolt looks an aweful lot like the bolts that came out of my a/c compressor right before it flew into the trash. (never knew a/c could fly before, maybe I would've kept it..)

A blown apex seal shouldn't cause anything to make its way into the oil passages. I make it a practice not to reuse oil coolers when a motor dies internally. How much for another rebuild and how much for a new cooler? Cheap insurance if nothing else. Just my $.02

Uh, a new oil cooler is over $500 US from Mazda. Perhaps just have it flushed at a rad shop instead of replacing it.

Yeah, I gasped when I saw the price of a new cooler. My big mistake was not understanding how the cooler work with the thermostat. When I got it flushed at a radatior place they handed it to me as flushed. I said, "Did you remove the thermostat first?". They said "Thermostat?". Then I leanred even if you remove the thermostat and flush you are not forcing anything through the cooler.

So I devised a plug for it. Then took it to an aircraft repair place that cleans out oil coolers on a daily basis. I have peace of mind for my new engine.

Atkins warrentied the engine. So it did not cost anything for the engine. However, it was a little extra for some work on the turbo because the oil hurt it too.

Oh, on the second install I found the home for that bolt. The AC:)

I remeber learning how the engine mounts work:) I was under the car unbolting the engine mounts. I was working on the pass. side one. So I started with the three in the oil pan. I was thinking it would hold the engine regardless of the bolts being in there. So as I pulled the last one out.....WHAM!! The damn engine dropped about 2" with me under it! The chains on the hoist were still slack. Freaking engine was leaning on my ABS unit. Good thing it was shock mounted. Man that was scary
