Engine oil seals or turbo oil seals?

Anytime I cruise as a steady throttle above ~5,000rpm or higher I get a smoke cloud behind me. Same when I accelerate at WOT in lower gears at approx. ~2,500rpm-4,000rpm. Does this sound more like a Turbo oil seal or an engine oil seal? I dont get much if any smoke on startup, other than a small puff or 2 for the first few seconds, which I assume is normal. My engine has been rebuilt but I have no idea when. ODO has 194,000 on it, so it could be 20,000 miles old or 100,000 miles old. Thanks

Sounds like a turbo oil seal. Are you running a TMIC or FMIC? take off the piping from the charge pipe on the turbo going into the IC. If theres oil in there its your turbo.

I have the same thing, I have narrowed mine down to bad oil seals. I guess at higher RPMs, the oil pressure increases and it gets pushed past our worn old seals. :(

I have a stock TMIC, and when I do take it off I ussualy see only very minimal oil mist on it. And yeah Tweak, that might be it, I guess I will see when I get my BNR turbo. If it still smokes, oh well. Drive it till I can afford a rebuild. Little smoke never hurt anyone, except for the mosquitos :)

The weird thing is its almost like its on a switch. At say 4,800rpm it will be fine, but then I hit 5,000rpm's and it starts smoking like crazy. Does it under load (in gear driving) or sitting still revving. Which is why I was thinking maybe turbo oil seal, since it seems like it would smoke more under load, but maybe it is pressure related like you say Tweak. Anybody else have a guess or experiance with this?

I have a similar problem, but mine will smoke when it idles below 1400 and smokes when I shift. I have an aggressive street port and my engine was rebuilt about 20,000 miles ago.

I think the smoke is coming from a bad oil seal in my turbo because I found oil in my throttle body and intercooler piping. <--- Does that sound right?

Probably so, unless the oil fairy is trying to confuse you and is pouring oil into your intake at night

Lol. Yeah she's clever like that. Gotta watch out for her.
