Engine dies when put in gear
Hello,
I just put new gaskets in my engine because of a blown water seal. Now when I crank in and put it in gear,it dies.I`m not sure what would cause that and was hoping someone here might have an idea.I`m fixing to go out and double check everything for the tenth time. Thanks 88 RX7,automatic |
your clutch slave or master cylinder would do that
|
It`s an automatic.

Where is your idle set?
Any vacuum leaks? Did you completely rebuild the engine or just replace water seals? Did you move the wiring harness around alot during the rebuild? Finally, have you tried holding the engine at a higher RPM and slapping it in drive? I know it sounds harsh but hey, gotta get it MOVING to test shit. Hold it around 1500 RPM in neutral and shift into drive. |
does the car run fine in nuetral? Idles good and revs?
did you remember to connect the large vacuum line that goes from the intake to the automatic trans? I'd also look at the electrical connections on the transmisison. |
No vacuum leaks that I can find.
Not sure about the idle setting. Just replaced the seals and gaskets. I moved the harness (had to) All the vacuum lines are connected. All the electrical connections are connected(I marked them before I took them loose.) It idels so-so,sort of sounds like it chugs every now and then. When I pull it in gear, sometimes it will stay running, but when I try to back up or go forward,it`ll chug(act like it skips)and go dead.I`ve adjusted the timing forward and backwards, just checking, with the same results. |
you need to figure out why it "chugs" its probably a vacuum leak

The problem is with the engine and not the transmission then. You need to figure out why it "chugs" at idle.
Vacuum leak? Bad ground? (The one on top of the engine for the primary injectors) Mis-alligned CAS? (Do you have a timing light?) |
I will get a timing light tomorrow morning. The ground wire is connected, but I had another one hooked up before(I had put it on myself)I`ll hook it back up.
|
You also mentioned that you replaced the water seals... it is possible that the engine isn't firing on all chambers. You might want to do a compression check if the problem persists.
