Emissions removal done, car starts and dies

Ok so I've searched and searched and cant find anything close to what I need besides vacuum diagrams and thats still not all that helpful.

88 s4 tII the turbo took a dump on me so I put a jdm s4 turbo on it and everything got new gaskets, installed block off plates so I don't have to worry about extra things I don't need.

So I start the car fires and dies. I've done everything I can think of, nothing makes a difference I've unpluged and repluged, un capped and recapped, switched hoses around untill I can't see straght and nothing makes a difference, the car does the same thing

So this is what I've got so far

Orange is fuel pressure sol. goes to the rail

Air bypass is gone

EGR is gone

Pressure sensor is T'ed to the BOV going to the back of the UIM

Im in a hurry so anything I've missed I'll add later

If anyone has a simplified s4 tII diagram that might be a great start

Any help would be awesome!!

I can even post pics later

Will it run if you hold your foot on the gas? After you removed the bypass air control valve I wouldnt expect it to idle right without you adjusting the bass idle set screw, you will prolly have to adjust your TPS after that also.

Na, it dies if its at WOT, foot off the gas, or feather'n the throttle. It starts up fine, goes up to about 1500rpms, and dies.

Rotory Kang 08-15-09 02:30 PM

Yeah ATF is right, he has been helping me figure this out. Nothing we did could made it run..

This forum has had no end of threads posted concerning start and die. 1) Vacuum leak; not only hoses but gaskets at UIM and LIM and worn O-rings/grommets at injectors. 2) AFM not plugged in correctly or malfunctioning. The actual cause can be a time consuming (and frustrating) process. Read the posts

Rotory Kang 08-15-09 02:55 PM

^^ Not helpful!!! I've spent more time on this fourm than I want to admit have yet to find anything useful. If you read my post again you'll see that I replaced all the gaskets.

We were more or less looking for known problems, that people have ran into when removing emmision parts. I understand this can be a million different things. I've checked the vacuum hoses 4 times now. Gaskets for the block off plates are sealed with form-a-gasket 300. Almost positive those are not leaking. I'm assuming that nothing needs to be done with the wires we have unplugged from the BAC and such..?

The O2 sensor is unpluged, but that should have no effect.

Also I've searched the haynes manual, with no luck, there is a part on the inside of the lower intake manifold. It has two vaccum lines coming out of it. What is it? And can it be disconnected?

See if we cant get pictures of it.

:icon_tup: atleast this thread is going better than i thought it would!

Jumper the fuel pump check connector and make sure the pump runs continuously. Then try to start it. It sounds like the pump is only running when the key is HELD to Start and once the engine actually starts and the key is returned to On from Start, the pump is running no 'mo. Because the circuit opening relay isn't staying energized by the vane in the AFM.

I'm really, really, really having a hard time not saying what I want to say about this thread and the owner of this thread.

Take the pictures you promised.

Umm... Thanks for the help I guess... We'll check it tomorrow. And whats that all about? You have some trash talking start with someone you don't know and have never talked to before? Same ole RX7 Club....

HAILERS 08-16-09 09:23 PM

Read the following :

"^^ Not helpful!!! I've spent more time on this fourm than I want to admit have yet to find anything useful. If you read my post again you'll see that I replaced all the gaskets. "

Then read this: "Im in a hurry so anything I've missed I'll add later

Then this: " You have some trash talking start with someone you don't know and have never talked to before? Same ole RX7 Club....

Sorry,I don't have to "TALK" to you. What you have written is enough to piss anybody off. Your just another usless twit who asks questions half assed and NEVER CONTRIBUTES a thing to this forum. Your too damned dumb to understand and learn anything from this forum. Get lost, I'm IN A HURRY and *DON'T HAVE ENOUGH TIME* to help your sorry ass. You can kiss mine.

Rotory Kang 08-17-09 07:39 AM

Wow, why are all you fourm people the same?

Why did you even put that last line in?

Why can't you just help someone that has a question about a common interest?

Why does it always have to be flaming someone, Mister 19,080 post... get a life. We've have spent the whole weekend with this laptop in the garage working on the car and searching this bullshit foum looking for answers to our problem. Nothing has any bearing on what we are doing.

If we overlooked the answer big deal, just help us out. My name Isn't Winkle so I don't know everything about the 13b.

On a second note,

The first rule on this fourm if you take the time to read it clearly says no flaming or trash talking, you will be warned and then banned, but yet here we are AGAIN off topic talking about nothing that is going to get my car running. What and why would I contribute to a bunch of assholes that do nothing but rip on people and think they know everything but can't just give a straght answer without saying something negitive.

My car is about 25 miles from me so sorry if I'm not fast enough with more info or pictures they will come.

Again thanks for proving me right with RX7 club.

You come here demanding help, dissing the forum with a combative attitude, piss people off, then whine that DaClub is so harsh and mean-all with only 28 posts?

You have now pissed off Hailers, the single most helpful, patient, knowledgeable member left on this forum.

The only consistent feature of all your dissatisfying experiences with this forum is YOU!

ATF BURNER 08-17-09 12:16 PM

ha... i do want to stay out of this, but why are you jumping onto rotory kang? from the looks of it hailers did start it.. but he has a larger post count....

thanks for the help. sorry to waste your time. we'll try honda-tech next time, probly get the same answer...

good to see there is a great family out there for the rx7 community.

Rotory Kang 08-17-09 09:55 PM

Ha.. Your a joke. Way to stick up for your friend. I didn't start anything your smartass friend did. All I did was ask a question, it's up to you to deside to answer and how you answer.

N E WAYZ..

If anyone else would like to help WITHOUT having a attitude I would love to hear it..

Pic Time..

What is this and can it be removed? blocked off?

Is this hooked up correctly?

plainandsimpo 08-18-09 10:40 AM

hey rotary kang check to see if you pluged your afm back up ...and in your 2nd picture see if you left those nipples un-caped ..if so cap them ..the ones right next to your throttle cable

sharingan 19 08-18-09 11:54 PM

Had a similar problem with starting and dying when I blew one of the IC couplers off, double check those clamps.

That piece of crap in your first picture is part of the cold start assist and should have been one of the first things removed.

When I did emissions removal/electrical ground refresh, I had a similar starting problem. After trying everything I put 2 tsp of oil in each housing and it started right up and idled like a (smokey) champ.

Rotory Kang 08-19-09 11:34 AM

Cold start assist thanks.

What about that check valve in the second pic? I have the oil sqirters and fuel vac on the other two nipples on the back side of the throttle boddy.

On the front three I have Map, Boost, and charcol canister? I'm not 100% on that I'll let you know when I get back over to the car.

The BOV is hooked to the single nipple on the side.

 A little left field of our problem, maybe, but can you explain why this worked?

I really need to look at this more.. It is hooked up, but looking at his harness, wires could have broke when we unpluged it.
I think this will be the first thing we check, when we go back at it.

misterstyx69 08-19-09 07:42 PM

Ok..if the AFM is not Plugged in,the car will start.but DIE.over and over again, until you plug the AFM in.
you put on Block off plates. What did you use to Seal the plates Onto the manifold?( I installed plates and when pressure tested they leaked!)
did you remove the Oil injectors?to go Premix?did you block the holes off?use crush washers on the bolts?
IF you are blocking off vacuum Nipples. Please USE a bit of Sealant and a CAP...do NOT use a piece of Rubber Tubing and a BOLT..you get Vaccuum leaks, trust me!
and the last suggestion is to get a pressure tester.(like the one on www.fighters-garage.com ) 28 bucks makes it's Money back in no time at all, with your labour and parts "fishing".
I will also suggest to put some Sealer on the manifold gasket.(you did have to take the manifold off a couple of times.could be a vauum leak)
actually IT does sound like a HUGE vacuum leak..
OH..suggestion!..did you hook the brake booster HOSE back up again??..that would be a huge leak there!

Thanks.

I cut gaskets for the block off plates then uses form a gasket 300 on both sides along with on the intake manifold gasket. Oil injectors are still in place. We are using caps. If i didnt hook the brake booster up it has a cap on it..

If it was a HUGE vacuum leak I would hear it correct?

The car sounds fine when it starts.. Even runs good... Then it just dies. Im really thinking its a problem with the AFM.

misterstyx69 08-19-09 10:34 PM

I had vacuum leaks and honesly could not Hear them, but the car ran liks Sheeeiit!
I had vac hoses open..NO sucking sound, but the car would idle.BUT touch th gas,,Blah!
it would get past idle,if you screwed with the pedal,,but then Backfire.
So really,.NO,you may not HEAR the vacuum leak.
that is why I suggested the Pressure tester..
get a Hold of JIMMY@fighters-garage.com and he can send you out one..I am IN Canada.,and these guys ship Fast!
the Best thing for the Block off plates is a Graphite color Paper gasket.the SHEET type stuff that you can get at a Auto Parts store..heat resistant stuff..Just put the block off on the Paper, trace cut and then Use a DRILL and Drill through to cut holes in the gasket..FAST and effective.Done.your own gasket.
I had some Exhaust type shit on there and it was garbage...just using the Squeze tube Sealing stuff is not really 100 % effective.Especially when it comes to BOOST.Use BOTH gasket material and the RTV will ensure you don't get a Vac/boost leak.
and YA,it does sound AFM related..but I tell ya,Vacuum leaks can make it Run like POOP!..Good luck,STYX..(lemme know what you find out,ok?)

Rotory Kang 08-21-09 05:59 AM

That pressure tester sounds like sweet deal. I just looked at that, worth the money. Thanks!! The harness has seen better days. It wouldn't suprise me that AFM went just from unpluging it, wires are old and brittle in some places.

School starting monday for my little girl so car time had to take a pause. I'm hoping to get to it later this weekend we'll let you all know how it goes.

Thanks again for the help and ideas! From the way this started out it was looking like we were gonna be on our own with this project.
