emergency brake leather removal
Does anyone know how to replace the leather trim on the emergency brake lever? I pulled the entire device off a junked car, but I don't want to install it all, just the leather wrap. Thanks!

as far as i know the leather didn't come stock on any FCs. if it is one of those aftermarket ones then you have to pull the bottom of the boot up and cut the zip tie thats holding it on.

My 91 parts car came with leather on the e-brake handle. It definately looks factory. I have no idea how to get it off, though. I was thinking about pulling the whole lever off and switching it on to my car.

Man I have an 89 GXL and I don't have a leather e-brake boot. I thought GXL was supposed to be the luxory model to :uh:

Its been a while since I've owned an FC but doesnt the ebrake handle cover just slip off? If anything, its held on with a crappy phillips screw. My brother put a leather boot on the ebrake handle of his FC. I wasnt there when he did it but it cant be that hard since he didnt call me for help.

This isn't the boot, its the actual handle - the thing you put your hand around.

Hmm, I don't see any easy way to remove just the handle part. I'll take a closer look tomorrow.

Im at work right now or I'd check the FSM. Maybe theres some info in there?

Mine was brittle, and was coming apart, and eventually fell off. I found it was glued onto the ebrake... so, you might need to replace the whole thing
So now I have a nice and grippy handbrake ;) |
The leather ebrake HANDLE was factory on some S5 cars. Turbo II's for sure.

Thanks for all the replies!
I have owned 2 1990 Verts and they both had leather wraped E-Brake handles. I would not be suprised if they are glued on, however I saw one in the junkyard that had beed striped. That is, the only thing left on the lever was the e-brake lever. I believe that was the GXL model. It is definatly an S4 though. I checked the FSM, it tells how to dismantle the entire e-brake, but not how to remove the leather. I guess I will have to do a direct swap. Thanks for the input! Matt|ttaM |
if you're talking about the grip part of the handle...then the little silver part screws off and the grip you can slide off with some force...well more than some but it'll come off. the glue isn't that sticky my brother and i took ours off both have 86 GXLs
i like it off completely off, it was nice during drifting for some reason. |

I removed the entire hand brake lever from the junk car, now I want to remove only the leather grip and place it on my car. Both of these levers are from the S5 model. Perhaps that makes a difference. The FSM and Hayes are no help. |
Bumps removed. Bumps (besides making it look like your question has been already answered) are forbidden here in the 2nd gen RX-7 technical section.
The boots on the handle part are normally sew'd on when the parking brake handle is assmbled. To remove it, so that you could put it on another vehicle, you would need to remove the entire handle part, by twisting and pulling it off the metal sub assembly. The odds of doing this without damaging the handle are pretty high. |
