electronics problems

I just bought a 1987 Rx7 turbo II, there are several problems, one of which is the cluster and the clock. The clock flashes on and off while driving and doesn't stay on time. The boost guage and the oil temperature gauges on the cluster also do not work. Has anyone had this problem and can anyone give me some advice on how to fix them. Thanks.

As far as the idiot light cluster/clock that is pretty much standard for the FC's. The electrical system in our cars is not really the best for durability when it was made and after these many years it has just gotten much worse. Bad cold solder points in the idiot light cluster cause the clock to receive power, then die, get too little power - reset, et cetera. Not real sure on the boost guage, it might be bad connections or your boost sensor in the engine compartment. If you are referring to the oil pressure guage... I have no idea. Never heard or seen that one act up yet.

As AcidShock said a pretty common problem. Cold solder joints can be found in many of the parts made by Imasen for Mazda.

The fix would be to disassemble the clock/idiot light cluster and remove the old solder from the pins of the plug where they attach to the circuit board, then to flow new solder in.

I also repair them inexpensively if you would prefer. Feel free to PM or email me if you would like to go that route.

thanks guys, so do i just remove the CPU and just resolder all the points?

Icemark Aug 25, 2003 09:23 AM

Not the CPU, the idiot lights.

The CPU controls things like the horn, turn signals, warning beepers, etc.

The clock/idiot light panel is what would need to be resolderd

oh. so how do i do that?

Hey ive got a question. Can i hook a a PS2 to my clock? I know all those rappers on cribs like to"gameout" their rides. Well my car is two small for that so i thought i could just lay it on the dash. I am also thinking about installing some neon lights under my car. It will bring out the gold in my driverside wheel in the front. I dont have enough money for four rims so i just got one. Anyways what do you think about the PS2. P.S what do you think would look good, ive got 20" rims but would 22s look better

Sarcasim?

Yes, you can hook a PS2 up, though I personally don't belive that a car is any place to be playing games. Your other suggested mods are frowned upon in the real sports car world as well.
