electrical problem FUEL PUMP!!

after spending all day on it and fixing the plugs and wires that were all screwed up by whoever worked on the car before i know now i have a fuel problem. i ripped up the back of the trunk and made my way to the fuel pump. first thing that i noticed that the connector for the pump was GONE and electrical tape has replaced it. i pulled both fuel lines off the pump and looked in them and they are both completely dry. real quick i just pulled out the pump and made sure that there was enough gas in it and it looked alright. well the next thing i did was took a test light to the power wire to the fuel pump and now know that its just not getting power. i found the circuit opening relay under the dash that controls the operation of the fuel pump. thats were i stopped. today i got some really good information off of ALLDATA and OnDemand on how to test the relay and hopefully find out where the problem is. im just wondering if anyone can give me a couple tips as to what the problem might be and if theres anything else i should double check. when i get home im gonna give another shot at it. o yea last night before i stopped just for kicks since i didnt have the information i needed, i tested each wire going into the relay for power, and only one out of the 5 wires had power if that helps at all. im determined to get this car at least running, then i can find out what kind of condition the rest of the car is in. the car is a 88 auto, base manual by the way

Do you have a copy the the FSM fuel & emissions section?
The electrical diagrams & test proceedures are all there.

A link to the PDF files is in my sig.
