electrical mayhem!?

or something like that. Well, I have my turbo II engine and tranny in my 88 GTU finally. Wiring is giving me some problems though. I seem to be missing my plug for the back of the alternator for some reason. I took the tape off most of the harness to look for broken wires or anything to explain why I have no alternator connector. Results were ( in order of ecu towards the end of the harness) : 1) green with red dashes every inch or so, 2) what looks to be a ground wire with a sheath on it near the back (pass. side) of the intake mani. and finally 3) a yellow wire with a white stripe and red dashes every inch or so, that came out near the front of the intake mani by the TB. None of these are what Im looking for, I need black with white line and white with black line for the missing connector. dDub already helped me for an hour or so over AIM and all that we came up with was that the green wire is for the temp sensor on the water pump housing. Any ideas anyone? I cant find anything for that missing connector, its like it and the wires are gone?

green wire = pic #1
black wire = pic #2
yellow wire = pic #3
random other plugs accounted for in pic #4

Sorry for the MS Paint editing on the pics but you should get the idea.

is the alternator a s4 like the car? the s4 and s5 alternators had different connectors

BigMike85 09-05-05 07:26 PM

1988 car 1987 engine, but it has s5 rear iron and i have two alternators to choose from one is definately S4. Both accept the same kind of clip in the rear.

The non turbo alternator plug is on the EMISSIONS HARNESS. The turbo alternator plug is on the ENGINE harnesss.

It looks as if you have a turbo EMISSIONS harness on a non turbo car. Fix the turbo EMISSIONS harness to be compatable with the non turbo FRONT harness.

Look at the free, online FSM or buy one and read the wiring schematics.

It IS a TII engine... (notice the support for the TMIC?), or did I misunderstand you?

HAILERS 09-05-05 09:55 PM

Ok. Tell me this. Was the car a non turbo in it's first life?

Yes, it was NA to begin with

This was a complete swap, minus the rear end, I already have an LSD.

Dude, you got nothing on me! For no reason, just out of the blue, and with me not doing any electrical work, now when I push the RIGHT side map light on the overhead counsel, the "door" light on the warning light cluster goes on and the light stay's off. Beat that!

Answer me this: Did you remove the original harness that has the fuel injector plugs on it and put in one from the turbo car? I'll hang out for a few minutes for a response.

BigMike85 09-05-05 10:13 PM

that is a turbo harness in the pics, yes

HAILERS 09-05-05 10:21 PM

And you did not change the FRONT harness? The Front harness is the one inside the car that the EMISSIONS harness connects to. The EMISSIONS HARNESS is the one with the fuel injectors plugs on it.

Once you understand that you should be able to make sense out of my first post.

The turbo EMISSIONS HARNESS does not have a connector for the alternator like the non turbo EMISSIONS HARNESS did.

So stop looking for the alternator plug. It ain't there unless you also installed the turbo ENGINE HARNESS, which no one in their right mind would have. I'll stick around for a few minutes.

BigMike85 09-05-05 10:24 PM

what do you mean by front harness? I only know of body, engine and dash harnesses?

Thanks for the help so far/putting up with me

HAILERS 09-05-05 10:43 PM

The harness that has the injector plugs on it and the solenoid plugs on it and the other end that connects to two plugs on the ECU is ......EMISSIONS HARNESS.

Inside the car, there are two other plugs on that EMISSIONS HARNESS, other than the ones that you connected to the ECU. Those other two plugs are dark yellow and connect to mating connectors inside the passengers side, waaaay up to the top right of the passengers foot well. They connect to the FRONT HARNESS.

The ENGINE HARNESS on a turbo car has the alternator plugs. The EMISSIONS HARNESS on a NON TURBO car has the alternator plug. You chunked you NON TURBO EMISSIONS harness and installed a TURBO EMISSION harness. That leaves you with no alternator plug for the alternator.

To ME that's not a big deal. I'd worry less about the alternator plug than having the boost sensors output wire splicing into a 12dc METER FUSE. The Boost Sensor only puts out about 3.5 volts dc to the boost gauge and the ECU pin 2B. Pin 2B is not happy when it sees 12vdc. Later. Tell you what. sometime b/t now and tomorrow I'll post some jps of the wiring diagrams to show what I'm talkig about.

BigMike85 09-05-05 10:49 PM

Okay, I get it i think... never knew about this issue in the swap.

And front harness = everything in the dash? and Engine harness = the one in the engine bay already? Sorry, I didnt know the technical terms for the different harnesses

Is that in reference to the wire going off to the fuel cut defenser?

Thanks for the help man.

Here's a pic out of the 87 FSM. The EMISSIONS harness has no color. It's clear.

The ENGINE harness is colored BLUE.

The FRONT harness is shown in RED.

Not all the FRONT harness is shown in this view.

BigMike85 09-05-05 11:15 PM

let me know if im getting this right then. The NA has the plug on the harness fishing through the firewall ( clear in the pic) and the TII should have it on the blue harness?

This is a jpg of the TWO PLUG ON THE EMISSION harness I've been mentioning. The one on the left the designated X-15. That is the one that in my mind is the important one.

See the ( ) at the pins that means for a turbo car? It has meaning. See the BrR on the EMISSIONS plug????? That brown/red wire is from the BOOST SENSOR. It usually is less than 3vdc FROM the boost sensor.

Now the problem is, you didn't change out the FRONT harness that plug mates with (I wouldn't change that harness for four hundred bucks myself). So what you have is the BrR boost sensor output going NOT to the boost gauge as on a turbo car, but it's going to the BW wire on the FRONT harness which lead to ......EEEEEEK! the METER FUSE which has 12vdc on it. That in my opinion is not favorable for the operation of the car/engine.

There's several ways around this small problem. One way is to go to the X-15 Emissions plug and remove the Br/R wire from the plug and wrap it in tape then tie it to the harness where it can't short to anything.

I'd also wager the water temp gauge does not work either. It's the YW wire, or Yellow/White wire. It's dead headed and ain't a gonna go nowhere close to the combination meter.

TonyD89 09-05-05 11:31 PM

This sounds like a real pain in the ass. I'm trying to put a '91 turbo in a '89 GTU. Do I also need to swap the instrument cluster, also?

So that is the yellow/white wire that was in question in my first post.... meaning I could probably tape that up too?

Any ideas on that black wire as well? I assume it is a ground.

You got it. since you don't have a REAL ENGINE harness, it ain't a gonna be there for you.

Here's some pics of the rest of the FRONT harness and how it routes. Alternator diagrams later.

BigMike85 09-05-05 11:42 PM

I also did NOT know that the front harness was done in that direction, that picture makes things a lot more clear, the front and emissions harnesses come into contact in the engine bay and under the dash ( by way of x15 and x16?).... interesting.

Here's a pic of a NON TURBO alt schematic. Note plug X-15. Also note how the plugs are designated EM for emissions and F for front.
