Electric Fans
 

What type of electic fans are you all using in your cars? I have an 88 SE, and I need to get one because it takes forever to heat up in the winter, and freeing up a few ponies is a nice benifit :D . Could you please include type, cost, and ease of instilation, and where you got it from. Thanks very much.

i got my electric fan from the junkyard for $15..forgot what kinda car it was. works great and i got a new thermostat and ran it off that..cheap and works just as good as those $150 e-fans

I dont own one (meaning an rx-7) but i know people use a black magic universal 15 inch style 150 fan. For about $200 and cheker auto parts should carry this. check around though.Oh dont do anything to the running temp it will fuck your whole car up.

i've got a blackmacic fan..just have not installed it jet..it will be going on a griffin rad.i did put 1 on my ford ranger,and it works great,comes with a adjustable thermostat,and its well designed as far as install-even thou,not sure if there is anything especially hard about a install on the rex...clearance in my truck was real tight,i have a double row rad and i swapped in a 4.0,so i have about 3/8 of clearance between the waterpump and the fan,and had to make some custom brackets to make it work.the kit comes with a "clamp" system,it clamps on the rad via brackets top and bottom.[hmm..might have to do it side to side on stock rad. on the rex..].anyway,check www.summitracing.com for the best price,its a good unit.later

Alternator / electrical?
 

How is the electrical affected when you install an electric radiator fan? (do you notice dimming headlights / faster-to-wear out alternators, etc?)

I was thinking about this for my 1990 TII conversion, but i'd like to keep my alternators for more than 5000 miles :D

i use the high performance 16" from perma-cool. it cost 88 from summit and has the same cfm as the black magic. i live in vegas and have no problems at all.

I've got the SPAL 16" and it runs great. i think it only flows 2,300 CFM. I'm in West Texas and in the summer we hit triple digits, so far no prob what so ever. $150 from www.racesearch.com abit loud though when it comes on. It's all bidness (texan for bussines) though

Buy the black magic. I have one and its perfect. Im glad I didnt buy a cheaper one. Your engine is important so spend a little more for the best. I put mine on in like 20 minutes not including the time it took to get the pesky clutch fan off. Two brackets , four bolts. Three wires and a resister in a pair tree. Easy cheasy. Set the fan to full on then back off a tad just so its not on all the time. Not to loud. SOunds high performance. I have the red wire on my second from the left main fuse plug assembly so its on even when the car is off. And no my car starts right away in the morning and lights dim slights just like what every other eccesory causes...

I use the "Black Magic" from flex-a-lite; I used to live in PR, which is very hot all year long. There's no problem with the lights dimming or anything abnormal with the electricity.

i have a question,,if we have those crappy clutch fans,,then why is there a light in the guage cluster that says the fan is on,

We did one in a 1990 GXL (NathanRX7) and tested it, it was pulling 8amps(or volts) on start up and less than 2 continuous...

The light in the warning cluster has nothing to do with the mechanical, viscous-clutch fan.&nbsp The light is for the electrical fan in front of the radiator and AC condensor core.&nbsp If you look through your front nose/grill, you should see a ~12" electrical fan there.&nbsp If the light goes on at anytime, there is something wrong with the electric fan and/or circuit.

From what I understand the Fiero electric fans fit on with a minimum amout of customizing and will pull enough air to keep a 400hp monster cool. Brad (ragtop) knows more about that one and is planning to do that to his. Im just waiting to see how it turns out.
