Effects of a curved tail pipe?
 
I am having my exhaust made on Thursday if everything goes as planned. Am I am thinking about using a curved tail pipe aimed at the ground. The system is going to be single, with a dynomax ultraflow muffler. I know some racing series require you to run a tip aiming at the ground; and I was wondering if it had any adverse effects on flow. I would guess that the curve would maybe restrict flow a lil; but how much? Is it even worth worrying about? The reason I want to do this is to make the car appear to have no exhaust at all, since the single makes one side look naked. It would also help the people behind me in traffic to life longer and healthier lives. Also, would this help muffle the sound any?

It might actually make it louder, since it's now refelcting off the ground and reverberating under the car. I think the idea behind it is so when you spit flames you don't cook the car behind you...

If that's the case then I will just use a straight tip.

Have you shop put the tip on with a hose clamp so that you can point in in any direction you want. At the track I have to always turn mine to meet the sound rules. Just point it away from the meter and it drops 4-6 db. BTW pointing it down does nothing but pointing it up makes it louder...

Why would it be louder pointing up? I could understand it being louder if you were next to the car. But let's say from 30 feet away. I am curious why you would want to turn the tip if there were no adverse effects of it aiming towards the ground. Why bother turning it if it doesn't matter? I just want to hide the tip basically and I don't want to burn up the underside of the car. By pointing it down I can prevent alot of the exhaust from blowing right onto the rear plastic. But I don't want additional noise or a loss in flow. If there is no change from the tip pointing straight out the back compared to aiming at the ground the I will aim at the ground. This way if you stand behind the car you will not see any exhaust tips. Since the normal tips on our exhaust systems are in the neighborhood of 7-8 inches long, I was planning on using about a 3 inch long 60 degree angle, right off the muffler, which should hide it behind the rear bumper nicely. I'm going for the sleeper look.
