ECU Upgrade
 

Hello,

I was planning on getting a Apexi power FC for my 1990 TII and was just curios to see if anyone else has done this. I am aware that you have to buy a power FC for a FD and buy an adapter harness as well as an additional trailing coil pack with igniter. I am just looking to see if there is anything else I should know before I fully commit to doing the upgrade.

Ther are hundreds of people that have upgraded to the PFC with our harness kits. Our how-to covers the complete install. You will need access to a datalogit to load the base map and to take full advantage of all the tuning capabilities.

just get a haltech e8 with patch loom to match your vehicle (haltech make them).

unplug original ecu. plug patch loom into car harness. then haltech into patch loom and thats the wiring done..
download a base map from haltech and off to the tuners you go.

it runs on all the factory sensors except the air flow meter

you can remove your air flow meter as well so less restriction on the intake and as long as you keep the factory air pump it will legitamatly pass an emmisions test. as they are close loop 02 control.

also for an extra $100 for the solenoid you also have close loop boost control by the ecu.

standard series 5 rx7 with just the ecu swapped to a haltech e8 got 750km per tank of full on the highway in australia..



why change the original ecu?

the original ecu's are getting old and outdated.
they run on a system thats over 20 yo
not to mention the second rotor fuel cut for overboost and rev limiter..

while your at it if your 02 sensor is over 30,000 to 40,000km old you should renew it..

PFC does the same and costs less.

Now this is going to seem like a stupid question but is there a difference between the trailing coil packs from model to model (na to turbo?) or is it all the same?
and where is a good place to look for one?

Also you mentioned that you need the stock air pump to beable to remove the MAF? or did i mis read something?

Coils are all the same from 86-91, look in the for sale section or ebay, they are cheap $20-ish.

The AFM and the air pump have nothing to do with each other and neither are needed with the PFC.

my car has an abnormal idle. I installed a apexi BOV and made/installed a turbo inlet duct with an apexi filter. Now my car starts fine and after it warms up idles normal but after driving it my idle sits around 1000? what is causing this?

the air pump is needed if you want to pass an emmisions test..

much easier to have it on and pass than be defected and go through the whole getting it back on the road thing!!

if the bov vents to atmospere its probably playing up the air flow meter

living in alberta im not sure we even have emissions regulations?

If I were you I'd go with the PFC. I'm not sure how close you are to Priddis, Alberta, but Max at KKM industries (off the TeamFC3S forum) is a very knowledgeable rotary tuner with experience on the PFC.

First thing's first, if you plan on having someone tune it for you, see what they are comfortable with. If you are going to tune it yourself, READ READ READ!!!! You should be knowledgeable about tuning and different EMS's abilities before you make your choice.

to be honest i've never even heard of Priddis? What major city is that closest to?

I was planning on tuning the car myself but I was hoping to find someone who could give me pointers. I'm pretty certain i am going with the PFC just because it is alot more affordable so far than other ecu's.

And it can be kept with the PFC if someone feels like it. But when most people are at the point of installing an aftermarket EMS, most of them have removed all the emmisions from their vehicles already. Again the air pump has nothing to do with the ability to remove the AFM.

And I wouldn't be calling shops up to ask them for tuning pointers. It would be like calling a pizza restaurant and asking how to make their dough.

There is an entire sub-forum for the PFC, there isn't much that has not been asked before
