ECU not powering down Someone Smart please help!

I started experiecing a weird problem today that I did not have before.

I installed a S-AFC a week ago and had no problems untill today, so I know its not the install job. I double checked everything.

*Only starting today when I would turn off my ignition the S-AFC and digital AF gauge (also powered by the ECU power) would only turn off sometimes.
Sometimes it would turn off after a while.

-I could get it to go off by pulling the EGI Comp fuse in the engine bay also. When I returned the fuse it would remain off.

-It would also go off momentarily if I cranked the engine then come back on once car started.

*Then I blew the fuse for all the gauges (tach, fuel etc.)

-Once the fuse blew the problem with the S-AFC stopped.
With the fuse blown the AF gauge and S-AFC turned on and off properly with the ignition.

What the hell?

Please help
Ed

anybody got any ideas?

BTW If I replace the fuse the problem happens again, and when I remove fuse and problem goes away again.

So I'm pretty sure it's related somehow.

Done any alternator work lately???? I noticed that if I put the two small connectors/wires on backwards on the alternator that the car would run after the key was off. I accidently found that if the key was off, and the engine running, and if I dumped the clutch in gear and stopped the engine, the car/ignition would die. That lead me to the alternator that I had been working on and the two wires being crossed.

So dump the clutch in gear and kill the engine and see if the power to the engine dies. Make sense???

Your problem might be another thing. Maybe related to the installation of the new equipment.

does it happen depending on whether the lights are on or not? you probably crossed the illumination and power wires.

It doesn't matter if lights are on or off.

I didn't mix illumination/power wires because I used the wiring diagram that came with the S-AFC for my car.

Anyone had a problem with there S-AFC not turning off or blowing fuses in the box?

When I pull a good fuse (the fuse that gives power to gauges, the fuse I talked about earlier) the S-AFC turns off and I can here the EFI relay turn off.

Have you checked the wires with a meter??? or are you just sitting there saying, "hmm it doesn't work right"

I mean common, check the wires going into the AFC. Is the ignition wire, hooked to ignition? How about the constant wire??? how about ground???

You can't can't just go by," well I hooked it up correctly" if you are having problems. You have to actually get in there and check the wiring with a digital multi-meter.

The fact that you are blowing fuses suggest to me that either your wiring sucks and you didn't protect your wire connections from each other, or you have tapped onto the wrong wires.

If there really is no install related problems (which I doubt, just based on that it worked at first and now it doesn't), then you have a bad AFC.

Icemark I have been doing tests.
Have you ever hooked up a S-AFC?
There is only one power wire, an ignition wire.
There is no constant wire.

All my connections are taped seperately from each other, no touching wires.

When I take out the EGI fuse which cuts power to the ecu (as well as to the s-afc since thats where the s-afc gets power) I am still blowing fuses.

If it was my wiring of the s-afc I belive it would not blow fuses when the egi fuse was out because theres no power going there.

Now I'm led to the ignition since before I was blowing fuses when I would turn the ignition off it would take a moment to turn off.

I took apart the ignition today and it looks as if the contacts are no good. I'm going to replace the ignition and see if that cures the problem.

*What do you think about the car blowing fuses even with the egi fuse out.
Am I correct in saying that elimintes the s-afc wiring?

i am just getting the same thing after my T2 swap.. I would turn off the car and the SAFC would remain on.. I could kill it by pulling the EGI fuse like you.. But if it stays on and I go to start the car again the tack will not work.. weird..

edomund 10-08-03 06:37 PM

I figured it out!!!

I replaced my ignition switch (just the pigtail not the tumbler) and the problem is gone.

Your problem sounds exactly the same as mine try going to a junk yard and getting a ignition switch.
I bet it solves your problem.

edomund 10-08-03 10:50 PM

Dammit it's doing it again.

edomund 10-09-03 12:16 AM

The fuse thats blowing is the fuse that says:
meter 7.5 amp

What does this fuse do?

edomund 10-09-03 01:49 AM

Now the s-afc stays on whether the egi fuse is in or out.
But it's no longer blowing fuses.
The car even runs with the egi fuse out.

The s-afc should be off with the egi main fuse out correct?

Seems like the ecu is getting power from somewhere it's not supposed to be.

Any ideas of things to check?

edomund 10-14-03 12:21 PM

I really figured it out now! :)

I found a connection coming off the tranny that had exposed hot wire. It was grounding out on the tranny and blowing fuses as well as making all that other crap happen.

bcty check for exposed wires everywhere that might be your problem also
