EBAY new aftermarket taurus fans

Hey, anyone ever use the new aftermarket taurus fans on ebay that go for about $70

Are they any good?

keep the stock cooling setup, it is really the best. Unless you absolutely have to use electric fans, I'd keep the stock fan and shroud on.

Run the black magic flex lite there really good and blow really hard there cfm is in the range of about 2800-3000 cfm more then enough to keep the car cool all day long even at idle. Im running one on my rx2 and my rx7!!! just make sure you look for the universial kit and the cfm's go around what i said above here is a link.

Or here is another route the volkswagon vr6 any six cylinder 95 and up

+1, my car never gets over half temp guage (s4, you know the series with the working temp guage?) stock cooling system FTW!

Haha seriously we know, we deal with 115 degree summers!

there are some write ups about e-fans and im aware of a number of people that have gone and used the taurus fan but i think i remember something about the number of amps it draws and the fc electrical system not being strong enough to carry the load on the stock alternator

TehMonkay 05-09-07 01:13 AM

Some people like to do it for simplification. There are plenty of reasons why someone would want to go with that setup. Every other thread i read is telling someone not to do a mod and why not. Why not simply ask if they've read into the pros and the cons of it and then help them with their objective?

I just put this fan on my FC. Not because of any deficiency in cooling with the stock setup. For one, the stock fan saps out a fair amount of low end and midrange power. Even on a t2, while driving on a hot day, you kind of have to "force" the car to get up and move from a low speed start because the clutch fan is out there winding to high hell and your car sounds like a dump truck pulling out from a redlight, roaring it's way along.

The e-fan eliminates some of the noise and does make a noticeable difference in low end and midrange. It won't make your car a rocketship but it is worthwhile. I wired my 2 speed setup with relays to act like an oem efan...low speed is triggered by an oem temp switch, and high speed is triggered by the a/c activation.

I will say that the fan on high speed moves a SHIT TON of air but man the a/c is ICE cold now, compared to before. And no, my a/c was not deficient before, it is a 1 year old new dealer retrofit kit with all new components, charged with freeze 12. We all know how a/c tends to get warm when you're in traffic and cold when on the highway. Not with this e-fan...the air stays cold all the time now. Why? Because the stock fan wasn't pulling quite enough air through the exchanger at low rpm.

Of course this mod taxes the charging system more, but the losses to the alternator load cannot equal the losses to the load of the stock fan itself. My stock charging system is in good health and charges 13.8vdc normally, and about 13.1 with all loads on. Now with the e-fan on low speed, those numbers dropped by maybe 0.3vdc. With the fan on high speed, those numbers dropped almost a full volt. But, since I don't normally run the a/c at night anyway, I don't foresee charging with lights and high speed e-fan becoming a problem.

Is the fan your referring to the Taurus fan mentioned in the beginning of the thread?

It looks like this fan comes from 90-95 taurus and sable models, but there also appear to be more than one variation of it, some have a wider fan shroud and some have a cutout in the lower corner like the escort fans. All the fans themselves are pretty much the same with lots of blades and 16" diameter. Some of the escort fans are single speed, if the escort did not have a/c.

First off, the stock fan is effective, but it would be turning backwards in my application, don't think that would work too good.

Next, I have a dead black magic POS efan in my garage. Lasted 2 months before the motor died.

RR, are you talking about this particular fan, (purchased from ebay) or the taurus fan in general?

BTW I live 20 minutes from $15 per POUND freon Ha
(no I won't sneek it across the border)

riverzendz 05-09-07 11:52 AM

FWIW the Taurus efan is used as an aftermarket application in a number of vehicles. RX-7's, Mustangs, Jeeps, etc. Everyone raves at the abilities of this fan and the average price (you can't beat it). If you go with an e-fan, this should be the one of choice as it will be your safest bet.

I've got duals from a mercury mystique/ford contour

With one fan on (one controlled by a switch, the other is temp. controlled by the haltech) I can pull the temp down until the gauge is nearly bottomed out (S4) or about 85 degrees on the Haltech. With both on its just ridiculous.

Don't know what kind of spike it takes to flip each fan on but with both running, headlights, radio, heater fan, doors open I'm still getting 13.5v to the battery with an FD alt.

Stock works fine sure but a properly sorted efan setup can work great also. The key in either case being - properly sorted -

SureShot 05-09-07 12:55 PM

I used a tarus fan with good results in the S5 turbo.

I have had 2 black magic fans fail.
One with a failed control in my 91NA.
One with a siezed motor in my son's '64 Nova.

Just Curious...

Several years before R12 was restricted most manufacturers changed from 16 oz cans to 12 oz cans.
I know that the R12 cans sold in Brazil are 12 oz'ers... :) Ever once in a great while, an old rusty 16 oz'er will show up on ebay.

I haven't been to Mexico in several years. Last time I was there there were more "R12 for $.99 " signs than Carta Blanca signs. Are those 'international' containers 16 oz cans or 12 oz cans? Most people I know refer to the price per pound are really stating price per can.

The last case I bought was $13 per can=12 oz.

Of course, bulk containers are being sold 'down there' as well. It is interesting that the bulk container is usually more expensive than the 12 oz'ers on a per # basis.

TehMonkay 05-09-07 01:38 PM

Damn enviromentalists, I was just shooting the R-12 out of my MR2 when I had it to do the retrofit, then my girlfriend pulled up and i had to stop because she would've killed me :(.

R-12 VS. Non-Catted Rotary, who wins?

Blackmagic also works, been tested on a humid 90-105F weather :)

They have a warranty, or you can purchase the electric motor separately.

Yup, their temp control plain out SUCKS :(

The motor on my blackmagin finally died (sort of, as I replaced it before it actually died) after over 12 years of use.

You should probably install a thermostat. It really is a major pain in the butt tuning when the temperature wildly varies as you drive. Irritating enough with just a street port, quite irritating when tuning a bridgeport.

Digi7ech 05-09-07 03:19 PM

Hmm. I may be going with the Taurus fan. 4500cfm is damn good.

I think my new plan will be the SPAL PWM fan control and the Taurus fan :D

I think this is justification alone for me to put an e-fan on. Cold AC at idle in the summer is something NONE of my 7's had... but... the AC systems weren't as "fresh" as Kevins...

Then you ad the benefit of a clean engine bay, no gigantic shroud, and less noise in the summer months... I think its worth the hassle.

AaronCake's e-fan myth write-up is a good read. Makes me wonder why nobody has created a method of delaying the amp-surge on fan startup. Possibly using a large capacitor... or a PWM controlled speed control type thing.

Probably overkill... but I always liked overkill.

slo 05-09-07 06:13 PM

I'm thinking of bulk purchase at a reputable auto warehouse.

Ive heard some of the cheap stuff sold on the street can be anything from propane to who knows what.

Your right about the 12oz cans, but I have a 16oz can.

The fan available on ebay is the same unit that most repair/body shops get in the event of damage through their parts dealers. My friend purchassed this exact piece for his FC on Monday through his "crash and rust" distributor. He has been in the auto collision business for over 15 years and deals with this sort of thing multiple times a day. If he says the part is reputable, I take it as gospel. Just make sure the Taurus/Sable fan you get has a 'Siemans' brand motor. There is a reason the OEM's used them. ;)
