Ebay Cone filters

Has anyone ever bought one of those super cheap cone filters and MAF adapters off of Ebay? If so what what is your opinion?

I'm a doubting Thomas and just can't believe they would be anything but a piece of junk. But I also am not sure that nearly $200 for the K&N system is worth it either. Suggestions anyone?

Just got my 87 sport running that I salvaged out of a friends back yard where it had sat for 6 years without having been started and was amazed that after cleaning the engine up, cleaning out the fuel tank and fuel system, removing emissions, power steering, A/C and then new plugs the darn thing started and ran sweet and smooth.

they should work but take everything on ebay with grain of salt you might get a brick.
i made mine and had it tig welded but now its not needed because i am running stand alone

i bought the cheap red one, the maf adapter looks fine to me, and fit properly and the filter seems okay, in fact i think the filter was cotton gauze and pre-oiled as well. idk, it worked fine and i got a little more boost with that and a custom pipe. just my $.02 cents.

they are all the same just a filter on a stick

The filters I wouldn't trust, but the adapters might be good. Autozone carries a AFM adapter for the 2nd gen RX-7. $14.99, and the holes actually line up, BUT, the "mouth" of the AFM has been reduced a bit by the adapter, which is no good. A little trimming and your ok.

The cones and adaptors that are on ebay are those shotty universal ones...

I would go K&N. You can blow on the filter and feel a breaze because of how well they flow. Also the end part is open, alot of them are closed with plastic. Also they offer very good filtering and are easy to recharge!

I got a cheep ebay one one my TII works fine. I wont ever buy a K&N, $180 for maybe an extra 2HP over the ebay one,I think I can fine something else to spend my money on. and if you go to the track just take it off! LOL

Ottoman 11-10-05 12:02 AM

although this doesn't relate to us directly

bear in mind Oil based filters like the K&N can have negative sideeffects on hot wire/karman based MAF cars'

the oil particle "cling" to the wire in the MAF and cause errors in the air metering...

since we have a giant aluminum swinging door or a sliding trambone we don't have to worry about it..

SpiffyD 11-10-05 12:34 AM

i got a K&N n i thought it was worth it i think that the adapters on ebay are good but i dont really trust the ebay cone filters

EBay filters suck because they barely filter. The AFM adapter has that square part instead of it being round. I can't see how it qualifies as such a better upgrade.

I think that buying something like HiGGi's adapter, K&N filter (properly sized off horsepowerfreaks.com) or Apexi (same place, if you buy the FC for the s5 kit you even get all the couplings and other shit). And then a VinSpeed cold air box.

That would do the trick to me. Ebay shit to me isn't worth the time.

Quality intake as I described above = $120-200. And you'd gain horsepower and be safe.

Engine rebuild = 2000
Quality intake = $120-200

Which would you rather deal with?

I go wit the K&N............

agreed. I've had an ebay filter forever and I've got no problems and see no reason to change it.

Oh and for the people that want to spend more money cause they think they are getting more. Just get one of those cone filters at autozone because it is the same thing as the ebay filters. If they fuck up cars they wouldn't be selling them because they would have quite a large lawsuite on thier hands.

Jager 11-10-05 03:01 PM

Maybe it is the filter that you get?

My experiences has sucked :(.

SonicRaT 11-10-05 03:03 PM

Yes, it varies, not all of them use the same filter. Some of them aren't EVEN filters, some of them are just some very fine mesh, and NO element whatsoever. Be very weary

Digi7ech 11-10-05 04:14 PM

Been using a ebay filter for 2 years now.

It is the cotton fiber style. Every couple months I wash it out and spray it down with a K&N cleaner kit.

bschnard 11-10-05 04:50 PM

I decided to bite the bullet and avoid the cheapies and went for the one from rotary performance that comes with the adapter, filter and a mounting bracket. Here's a link http://www.rx7.com/store/rx7/FCRaceIntake.html

Thanks for all of your comments.

josh greene 11-10-05 05:52 PM

thats a shame waste of $100 in my opinion.....

Jager 11-10-05 06:30 PM

I bought it too.

Sonik: Like I said my friend had a slight problem with his and had a bunch of shit come into his engine and fuck up his pissed-ons.

But I guess it just varies :(.

SonicRaT 11-10-05 06:42 PM

Yep, sometimes just spending the money on a certainty is a good idea.

Makenzie71 11-10-05 07:20 PM

I did a test with these kinda following the one done here and I found that the ebay filters flow better than K&N, but do not filter as much debris. The really fine stuff an oiled K&N picks up slips through, but an oiled ebay knock off really does a pretty decent job. Anyone who's ever trusted HKS can trust an ebay knock off...

~to add: My test was done on a leaf-blower powered flow bench with an oiled K&N and an oiled knock off. Each filter was subjected to 15g of fine corn powder (consistancy of flour) with with a silkscreen mesh placed at the base of the filter, then tested again without the mesh or debris for flow.

~~to add something else: Apex'i > *

All those ebay filters suck just like the autozone filters because the element they use is wack. Just get a HKS intake filter, its $125 for S5 and 150 for S4. On ebay they should be even cheaper and yes brand new. The AFM Adapters are ok though. I bought 2 of them, and they work. Its only a piece of metal with holes, why wouldnt it? remember, if you plan to be cheap, your parts come cheap.

HKS is the WORST filter you can buy in all regards...
