easiest way to tow the 7
 

how would you guys recommend i tow her? i gotta get her from pittsburgh to philadelphia via the turnpike so its going to be mostly highway. ive never had to do this before so any tips would be helpful. thanks in advance :)

When I got mine, they said it had to be flatbedded, why I dont know. So both times mine has gotten towed its been flatbedded

They have to be flatbedded because of how low they are. You have to tow a rear wheel drive with the front wheels on the ground and the rears on a trailor/dolly thing/ The front bumper would drag on any bumps/exit ramps or anything like that.

I had to pull mine out of a ditch one time and just used the tow hooks under the back bumper=)

I have dragged them all over using a tow dolly (driveshaft pulled).

Sorry off topic but...

I removed my rear tow hooks. Is there anything else they could use to pull the car out in case of a situation like falling into a ditch? Could they use the rear arms perhaps?

i used a u haul dolley...front wheels on it, rear on ground...just put it neutral and amke sure the ebrake isnt on :) i towed two cars almost 200 miles like this with no probs...

sort of a hijack, but im going to be towing an FC about 4 blocks, and im not renting a dolly or getting a tow truck, i just plan to use a tow strap at like 3AM, with someone in the car braking and steering. Where would the best place to attach the strap be?

i used the flat bed thing from uhaul and i dont think that id use anything else.

looks like i should go with the flatbed trailer from uhaul, next problem. what to tow it with hehe i dont think a 01 1.8turbocharged Passat GLS would handle this ;-)

well for short distances you have what? 3 tow hooks up front and 2 in the rear?

i pull my second fc with my 1st fc n/a about 5 miles from the person's house i bought it from to my house no problem. just be sure its someone in the second car braking and steering. i used a tow strap on the factory tow hooks.

Dude, don't worry with the flatbed. It is heavy, more expensive, hard on your tow vehicle, etc. Tow dollies work great for our cars. I hav moved no less than 100 FC's on tow dollies without incident. I never have any issues from the car hitting anythig or being too low. The only time you have a problem is if the car is auto, which means you have to drop the driveshaft. IF it is a 5sp, just put it in neutral and be sure the brake is off, and you're good to go.

I have hauled cars distances up to 400 miles before like this...just hauled one today this way out of the junkyard as a matter of fact.

Get the dolly, it is about $45 per day, and weighs very little, so it isn't putting unnecessary load on your tow vehicle. They have no tongue weight even when loaded.

you can rent pickup trucks from enterprise/alamo/whatever for like $30 a day or something I think. I dont know if they would have hitches, but it would be worth checking out...

i might try the rental car thing haha its worth a try. my uncle is a mechanic, he works on mostly VW's and mercedes-benz's im gunna call him up tomorrow...its either him or his son that has a flatbed truck so ill see if i can borrow that for the weekend ;-) its kinda funny i remembered this...cause over thanksgiving dinner i was talking to him about rx7's and how i was planning on getting one, he kept trying to tell me rotary was unreliable and that i should get a vw turbo diesel project car. i cant blame him tho hes got a diesel vw thats got 800k some miles on it. thanks for all the help guys.

Hey guys,

I was going to pick up my rx7 from SJ. Its a 1990 convt. I was going to buy a Master Tow dolly and drag it back with the rear wheels on the ground.
I have Redline in the manual tranny.

Do I have anything to look out for??

Manual trannies are no problem. Auto's require a drop of the driveshaft. That's it.

God, I towed my 87 with a U-Haul to dolly. Fronts on the dolly, rears on the ground. Tranny in neutral, drive line ATTACHED, over 1400 miles in 2 days. No problems whatsoever.

Even if you put the auto in neutral?

I'm not sure which is sillier, removing the tow hooks or suggesting the suspension as a tow point. :rolleyes:

I know they're worth at least a second down the quarter :D but just put the damn things back on. Any smart tow truck driver is going to tell you to get stuffed rather than risk being responsible for damage to your car.

BTW, why 3am? Aren't you guys allowed to do this?

Never tow an auto on the drive wheels any distance without removing the driveshaft. In an emergency, a few blocks slowly is OK, otherwise tow it on the front wheels (lock the steering) or pull the driveshaft.
