Dumpin bottles of isoprohyl rubbing alcohol in for emissions hurt my 7 at all?
 

Ive done it before to my civic after it failed horribly, and then I dumped in 6 bottles and ran it hard as hell back to the echeck place and she passed with amazing numbers. Will this hurt the rotary at all?

well shit, it shouldnt hurt it. Its alcohol, its gonna burn a lot cleaner than gas, and after echeck my tank is gonna get filled anyways. I just wanna know if anyone knows anything this would harm.

Use a bunch of DriGas or that guaranteed to pass stuff. Alchohol is much more flamable than gasolene so dont go crazy and it it knocks than stop what you are doing.

"if it aint broke, dont fix it".... if it runs fine with it, use it just to get passed emisions and you might want to retard your timeing some to reduce detonation, i dont know the properties of alcohol vs gasoline, i accually think that gasoline is more flamable making the retard timing thing pointless...... --shrug--.. have phun

alcohol has much higher octane but lower BTU.

octane doesn't matter, if anything it hurts for an emissions test, but the lower BTU means it requires less oxygen to burn, or rather you need to mix it a lot richer. It basically makes the engine run a lot "leaner", and is basically a Band-Aid for tuning problems and won't help if, say, a converter is clogged or dead.

Also, running extremely lean will cause misfires and will actually make HC's go up.

just go to the auto store...get a bottle of GTP (guaranteed to pass emissions) gas additive...pour it in a full tank...drive till its empty, fill it up...and go back to inspection. i did it and passed fine...

I got some of this stuff, Im pretty sure its just some kind of lantern fuel, anyway, it made my old 5.0 pass, and it only had 2 of its 4 origonal cats, at 160,000 miles! :eek:

What do they do with all the cars that dont pass? Or that people dont wanna fix? They just junk them? Might explain why Kentucky has all kinds of cars with out of state tags that are CHEAP...

I know the only car here with cats or that would pass an emissions test is the woman's 2000 Cavalier LOL

Most 5.0's will pass without any converters! Only when you start playing with bigger fuel injectors and huge cams do you have to have a pair of cats welded on the ends of your long-tubes...

When did Kentucky start emission testing? I lived there for four years in Lexington and never got tested in my 85 GSL.

you can fail 3 times, then you have to pay someplace at least $200 to put on parts that HAVE to do with emissions, then you are aloud to fail 3 more times, if you dont pass then you can get plates. Pretty fuckin retarded ay?

WHere do you get that "Garunteed to pass" junk from? I have been to Checkers and Auto zone and everytime I ask, they look at me like I am smoking crack...

Saw some at PepBoys a week ago.

I did this with my 3rd gen. It worked perfectly and I have no ill effects from it. I had a little less than a half of a tank. I put one bottle of alcohol didn't feel any difference, I put one more with no change. I put the third bottle in and then went to the emissions place and passed with flying colors. After the test the car did seem a little sluggish, I went straight to the gas station and filled it up and had no problem at all. This method was actually recomended to me by some mechanics whose speciality is working on automotive electronics and emissions.

Hailers, Did you put the GTP in as per instructions? Or did you just dump it in and head to the emissions place. I would rather pass using that stuff, putting rubbing alcohol in my brand new 13B makes my hair stand on end....

Okay, I got the GTP ran through, and now I am gonna try alcohol. I already got one bottle in on 1/4 tank of gas and it seems to be okay. Might be running a little hot though..Gonna try one more bottle and head to the emissions station.

Hailers never used GTP or alcohol. It never has come to that with my cars, but......I've eyeballed both concepts for the future. I figure though, as long as I use my present catalytic converter only for a week a year at most, that I shouldn't have a problem for some time.

HAILERS; you should know better. :D A week is way too long!

Take it to the station; put it up on the rack; swap in your cat; pass test; lift rack back up with car still in same spot; swap back to real exhaust. Under an hour the second time around, so think how long it would last then. Gotta know people though. And burning your hands on a smoldering hot cat, is all part of growing up.
