dumb external wastegate question
 

hey guys, so i removed my external wastegate to change the spring, and didnt make a point of noting which side the vaccum line was attatched and which was the vent side.. do i hook it back up to the side that sucks the gate open, or the side that sucks the gate closed??? without the spring in it i can operate it just by sucking on it with my mouth lol.. i know if i hook it up backwards its no good.. thanks for the help!!

wastegates accept pressure, not vacuum.

each wastegate is slightly different, you should look up the manufacturer's website for install instructions, but normally the port you need is towards the middle and the one at the end is the vent/secondary regulation port.

They are all different Im aware, but function the same way more or less... Vac line on the nipple that sucks it open or closed,? I have 2 choices lol...

you're thinking backwards still. pressure line on the one that OPENS it when PRESSURE is applied.

and no, not all are equal, synapse for example has 3 ports that all function differently. what you DO NOT want to do is have someone hand you the wrong answer, because it is not that simple. an improperly routed wastegate could cost you an engine.

thanks for the input man... so again sorry im such a newb to this, ive always had stock turbos on my cars in the past, this is my first external wastegate setup... so again, suuuuch a newb quuestion: you say pressure line...? as in the line for the wastegate is Not a Vaccuum line?? when you say pressure, as in in blows pressure out as opposed to sucking like all the other vaccuum lines im used to??

yes, although it may see vacuum when not boosting it is in fact a pressure line. the job that the wastegate does relies solely on pressure and not vacuum. because there is no vacuum generated during boost, and vacuum does not rise with boost.

Take a picture or find a picture of your wastegate and post it. Most all external wastegates have their pressure lines connected the same way(except of course the synapse), so you should be able to use the diagrams of most manufacturers.

please help, which was the vent wich connected to the pressure line???

blowing on the bottom nipple opens the gate, and sucking on the top nipple opens the gate... which one is it!!?? sorry it took me so long to get the pic up, i had lots goin on last week.. i feel like a shmuck for not taking note if which connected to the line

How soft of a spring do you have in there that you're able to suck it open with your mouth? lol the way a wastegate works is that a certain spring puts that much pressure in keeping the diaphragm closed. Once you reach a certain psi of boost, it overpowers the spring and the diaphragm opens.

Regardless, find out whatever brand it is and look that shit up. No one, unless they're running the same gate, can give you a definitive answer.

For what it's worth however, my precision 46mm gate utilizes the side port for the boost/pressure source. The top one is used in electronic boost controller applications.

lol, i took the spring out.... its a godspeed ebay wastegate.. i cant find anything online for it... please spare me your flamming on the godspeed wastegate, so far its worked great

I'm thinking you run the line to the lower nipple.
