dual stage boost controller
 

What are your opinions of the dual stage boost controllers? I've been doing some searching but no clear answers on the forum. I'm looking at the turbosmart dual stage or the turboxs dual stage controllers. My last (cheap) manual boost controller was very flemsy with holding boost so had to let it go. Has anyone used one of these before and are they worth it?

the stock turbo can't hold boost anyway. don't think it's the boost controller's fault.

bah who needs duel stage boost controller, its called your foot and partial throttle ! lol

i had a greddy profec b spec II in my old s13, you just leave it on one setting and never think about it..

that sucks to hear, hope that isn't the case but I'll at least try one more boost controller before I give up on the stock turbo. I'm not looking for anything crazy fast at the moment anyway... the B spec is an electric boost controller am I correct?

I have had dual and tripple stage boost controlers.

They are ok, not sure how they will work on your car unless you are making big power.

Other wise, a single stage is ok.

I used it to run 6psi in first and 2nd gear, then 11 in the rest.

On the stock turbo, that's quite true. It's hard to control boost on the stock turbo anyway, regardless of what controller you use. All you can do is fiddle with the dials and hope that you get the result you are looking for. :)

I had the same argument about not needing two boost settings with a friend a while ago. I was telling him how my EVC 6 had both high and low settings, and scramble, and could map boost based on speed/throttle position and RPM. He said something to the effect that it's all useless because of the throttle pedal. So I asked him if he just leaves the TIG welder up at maximum all the time and uses the foot pedal, even to weld tinfoil. Thus ended the discussion. :)

What multi-stage controllers give you is resolution.

will a ported wastegate make any difference with the stock turbo boost control?

Porting the wastegate will help or eliminate boost creep. It won't help with boost consistency though. I have the Greddy Profec B Spec II and it is pretty sweet. I can have a low (rain/cruise) boost and a high (track) boost setting. My problem is that like spooling spec V said I can only get like 6 psi in first, ~8-9 in second, ~9-11 in third, and ~9.5-12.5 in fourth, haven't tried in fifth. The stock turbo is just not meant for those boost levels sadly. It's still very fun though. :)

is there any advantage of an electronic boost controller other than you can adjust from the inside of the car and cool lights?

The solenoid is digitally controlled, so you can get really fine adjustments.
