dual to single exhaust?

hey guys
I'm about to go from the stock exhaust on my 89 GTU to an Apex N1 single, but I don't want to see the other exhaust port on the rear bumper empty, I think it will look crappy. I was wondering if anyone sold/knew how to make a part that would fit in the unused exhaust port. It's key that it's bolt in (no bondo) because I want to be able to put it on/take it off painlessly, like a silencer in a muffler, because I might go to a dual exhaust in the future.

Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks

it doesn't really look all the bad.

CyborgRyu 07-02-04 10:12 PM

you won't really notice, prepare to have your ear drums blown out cause the N1 is LOUD

So why not fit a dual system?

Are you wanting a fake muffler on that side, or something to cover the hole? If you're wanting to cover the hole and want it bolt on you can forget it, you'll have to find a new bumper. If you're wanting a fake muffler (and i don't understand why you would) then just have a muffler shop bolt another n1 on that side.

haha... no way would I ever put a fake muffler on. I just want a little piece of plastic or something to cover the soon-to-be-present gap where the stock muffler used to be.

Might as well just stay at dual exhaust right now than coughing up more money later. Dual N1 looks pretty good on 7s. There are a few members with it on theirs, search and see some pictures for yourself.

If your going N1 i'd say get the dual setup. It looks balanced(not stupid). With a single setup it looks god awefull stupid with one turned out can and nothing on the other side. Atleast the duals balance each other out.

PS-N1's are loud. Get ready.

And he means LOUD. Unless you really love the sound of the rotary, you're not going to like it. And there's the possibility of getting pulled over because they're that loud.

...unless you still have the stock cat setup, then it might not be that loud, but still louder then what it is.

Madrx7racer 07-03-04 09:25 PM

I had dual N1s and custom 2.25" piping fromt the cat-back.....i got a nice DEEP GROWL!

xvampyrex 07-03-04 10:01 PM

How much do the N1's usually go for? Im planning to go from the stock dual to N1 dual. Also, if its loud, then maybe I shouldnt gut the cats before I get the N1's?

West TX RX-7 07-04-04 02:14 AM

N1's are not loud with a basically stock setup. Once you get a bigger port job, bigger turbo and remove the cat it will be extremely loud.

xvampyrex 07-04-04 07:54 AM

Oh, so if I were to install dual N1s to my N/A with gutted cats, how would it sound? And I also plan on getting RB headers so how would it sound after I have that on? I mean I love the Rotary sound and I dont mind a loud car but i dont want to get a ticket every corner I turn

West TX RX-7 07-04-04 11:23 AM

You would be fine with a stock port running dual N1's.

Not with the RB header he won't...

xvampyrex 07-04-04 01:00 PM

Hmm....Thanks for the replies.....if I had the N1s and then i got headers, what besides a pair of pre-silencers(they are mad expensive) would help quiet down the car?

JamesWade2002 07-04-04 01:53 PM

I have big secondary ports, turbo II primaries, pacesetter header, 2.5 single pipe and straight through 2.5" magnaflow on the end of said pipe. It's loud. really loud. I live in a small town with cops that don't care and no emmissions testing. If I lived in say metro nashville or something like that, I would not go that route. It's really loud at idle and really really alot louder with revs. I have yet to rev mine above about 3500 cause I'm still in break in, but when I do, I imagine that it will be ear splitting loud at 7500. You will not be "street racing" with that exhaust and not be found for long.

xvampyrex 07-04-04 02:01 PM

Hmm over here in Orlando, there arent Emissions Test but there are some cops that are dick heads.....I just saw an FC with faded kind of flat red paint with a single N1 looking setup....Didnt sound too loud.

PS: If you have an FC meeting those specifics and you live in the Orlando area. Post here and tell me what you have.

A turbocharger soaks up a lot of noise. An exhaust that sounds OK on a turbocharged car may be incredibly loud on a non-turbo car. You cannot compare exhaust systems for turbocharged cars with those of non-turbo cars.

BlueSteel 07-04-04 08:47 PM

yea.... i do know the N1 is loud; I had one on the Integra I had b4 i got my FC. I do want to do a dual exhaust, but the reason im putting the single on is b/c i got it for free....the guy who sold me the car said i could have it, so i figured y not. Thats y i want a >temporary< space-filler for my rear bumper... so when i get the exhaust i want- the dual- ill have room for it. I also have the cat-replacement that goes with it.... but im not sure if i should install it b/c i dont want to get pulled over, also i heard a cat-less car will leave a black stain on ur bumper over the exhaust

Ahhh, suddenly everything seems to make sense. On an N/A RX-7, that would be seriously loud without a presilencer, and I wouldn't worry about a space filler, it isn't that noticable unless you are showing the car or something. If you are worried about what people following you think about your car, then maybe they should have a car fast enough to get in front of you ;) . As a temp job, maybe, but don't be looking for any friendly faces from the neighbors when you go driving by.

When you do get the money for an exhaust system, go for the GReddy power extreme cat-back with a RB header and either high-flow cat or presilencer, but with the GReddy, you probably won't need the presilencer. I have that system, came with the car, and it is great. The exhaust tone is nice, but you can barely tell it has any noise coming out, being that the engine makes more noise then the exhaust by far (you only hear the engine when standing next to it), and I didn't mod anything, except the intake. Great system IMHO, and I will recommend it to anyone looking for an exhaust. Also, I have an N/A GXL, so I know what boat you're in-sound wise, anyway.

xvampyrex 07-04-04 10:06 PM

Hmm.....I think I'll go with the dual N1s :) make some noise.....lol...but no one answered my question unless I missed it by accident. How much louder would the car be with gutted cats?

Also.

1) Would there be any HP/Accel. gain with gutted cats on stock mufflers?(for now)

2) Would my car sound any louder or diff. with gutted cats on stock mufflers(for now, I will get N1s later)

NA2TurboProject 07-05-04 09:30 AM

much louder

xvampyrex 07-05-04 02:46 PM

So gutted cats on the stock mufflers is still loud? Semi Loud or unbearibly loud?
