Dry Sump?
 

Hey all,

I'm looking for a dry sump oil pump that is made for the 13B. I've been searching the Net for days and I've only gotten one lead -- and that was from "do-it-yourself" personal plane builders that run rotaries in their aircraft. I appreciate their help and am making international calls from Germany trying to work it but...

I KNOW that someone has a dry-sump system for rotaries... Can anyone point me in the right direction? Web links, phone numbers... anything would help.

the dry sump setup that is integrated into the front cover is from Mazda Competition. if you are racing this car or intend to race it you can join the sort of club and buy this type of stuff. otherwise using a three or four stage dry sump pump and removing and blocking the oil pump, making a new oil pan, scavenge tubes, and brackets for the pump mount. front cover setup works and is easiest to install figure about $4000 to $5000 for the complete dry sump setup either way.

Why would you want to run a dry sump? Premix can eliminate the OMP if that is the reason.

:eek: $4000 to $5000???? Why so expensive? I mean, I was expecting around $2300... but double... Oh, that's just too too much. You can buy a complete motor brand new from Mazda for less than that!

I'm going to have to think about this one for a while :sad:

I need it for my... well, my Rotary Miata! It's either run a dry sump or cut the firewall, move the tranny tunnel, and do reconstructive surgery on the oil pan and pickup. I knew that the dry sump was the more expensive solution, but it's far better than putting the car down for 6 months and taking all over hell's half acre to get the work done (I'm nowhere near talented enough to cut structural members from the car and get away with it!).

The OMP is not the issue at all -- it's all about being to pick the motor up and stick it in something else easily. Now that I hear it's going to run me $4000 to do so... I'm having second thoughts...

I checked this out, and it all sounds very nice. However, I'm in Germany (which means I can't race in the classes/events that are elligible). Couple that with the fact that although I intend on racing the car, it's not a race car.

It's going to be my weekend/leisure car. Tag, titled, emissions-passing and street legal.

I'll call them tonight and see if they'll tell me where I can get the kit without being a "member".

Don't know why you need a dry sump to set the motor in a Miata. Check out this website http://www.rotarymiata.com/. Very nice install. Also, there is a complete dry sump motor for sale in Sports Car mag. Think they want about $5k for it. Just a thought.

The point is NOT to have to cut the firewall, raise the transmission tunnel, fabricate an oil pickup, and fabricate an oil pan. I've emailed the owner of the Miata you referenced -- he's a great guy and I wholly respect his work and dedication to the project.

However, his is all-out race and mine is all-street. His efforts are Herculean -- but I'd rather buy a dry sump and not have to go through all that.

you could dry sump the motor for less money but if you are not able to modify the firewal and such it may also be to difficult. the front cover with the oil pump built in is very easy and straight forward to install. you could modify the oil system to use an external dry sump pump and fabricate a new oil pan and scavenge tubes and mounting brakets. It would still cost about $3000 if you did the fabrication work yourself. seems it would be easier and cheeper to make the modifications to the chassis. good luck

ps I don't think Mazda requires the car to run in any specific series to qualify for there Competition program and parts can still be bought from them if your not in the competition program it just cost more(no discount). Time trial car qualify if I am not mistaken.
