Dropped socket down through top inspection port
 

My friends and I spent over 3 hours putting the T2 engine back in my S5. We were just about done when one of the guys dropped a socket into the top inspection port that is on the drivers side rear.
One of the guys took the starter back off but we can not see the socket. So, any comments or suggestions besides pull the engine or drop the transmission?

I think considering how much money ($6000+) and time I've dumped into this 7 that I should name her Angie. Project Angie has been a real PIA. But, I did get the engine rebuilt and mostly in. The last week in October I will have had Angie for a year and she hasn't been more than a hundred yards from the garage.

dont you have a magnet to reach in there to yank it out? use a vacuum cleaner to suck the socket out, or use compressed air.

Ha, I know how you feel. I've owned my car for 5 years and it's on I've barely put on 3000 miles on it. I'm just now putting in ANOTHER engine (after 2 rebuilds...) so we'll see.

anyway, getting that socket out shouldn't be hard with the starter off. Just turn the motor over with a wrench on the front pulley very slowly while having somebody watch through the starter hole. You'll find it.
oh and +1 for the magnet. magnet on a stick is a great investment

Keep your head up, things can go right, too. I built my first motor a few years ago, and it's still pulling hard after the 20k miles I've put on it, now I'm gearing up to go vmount, make a LOT more power, and pouring on all kinds of other awesome sauces.

the TII transmission has an extra inspection cover underneath, or is this another conversion with a n/a transmission that you spent $6k so far for? if so, sorry.

and too many hands in a motor just causes issues. regardless of how you may feel about your friends, the last thing you want is for one of them to drop a bolt into the intake while installing your engine. yes this has happened, not to me personally but to one of my customers while we were putting his engine in and his friends were helping, i didn't see it but someone must have...

Thanks for the ideas. I stopped by the parts store and grabbed a magnet. I just turned the engine over slowly and when I could see it I reached in and out it came. I only had two guys helping me. I'm not to much into getting really greasy and I only weigh like 110 so .....

Ya,but really your fingers are about the same size as the "guys" that made the car are..lol!
so really small is GOOD in your case!

Smally girly fingers would have been ideal for this. If it's an NA transmission, there is also a small inspection hole on the bottom of the bellhousing. Take out the rubber plug and poke around. Just for the record. Plus, grease is good for the skin.
