Driving lights power source
 

Allright, I am concerned about how the previous owner has hooked up the driving lights on my 7. (1987 GXL) They appear to be getting their power from the top slot of the green connector I have circled in the picture attached. Whenever the key is on the ON position the driving lights are on, as well as the amber park lights on the front, all the side markers and the tailights as well. (NOT brake lights) When I unplug this circled connector they all turn off. Now with the wire still unplugged, when I turn the headlight switch one click ahead, everything mentioned above turns on, and one more click ahead the headlights come up, so everything is working normally anyway. I just wanted to make sure taking current from this connector is allright or not. It's not plugged into anything else. (I don't believe there is a relay being used, I cant hear anything clicking when I unplug and plug the connector back in. Also with an ammeter in series, it reads a current of 13.3 amps.) oh, and the lights dont turn off when starting the engine. the lights have been wired this way for quite a few months now. Tell me what you guys think.

That's pulling an extra ~8 amps load at the end of a long wire on the IG2 circuit.
I suggest you use that wire for voltage to pull up a relay, and let the relay get power from a circuit breaker off the battery.

But first - It's possible the PO wired this lead to the existing fog light relay already.
Just to be sure, put an ammeter in that connection & check the load.

SureShot - I allready did that, as stated in my previous post the ammeter read 13.3 amps being drawn through that wire. That is, through that green connector. if there were a relay being used allready then there would only be 150-200mA being drawn.

TurboRX?Build - That isnt going to prove me anything, everything IS working fine, I am just asking someone who knows the wiring of the car a bit better than me if it is safe to be drawing this much current from this particular place all the time, without buning something out in the long run.

i would go ahead and throw in a resistor, and an extra fuse just to be on the safe side. rated for what you need of course
