driveshaft removal
I was gonna remove the driveshaft to replace the damaged u-joints, and it says in the haynes manual that the back of the exhaust system must be removed. I'm just wondering if this is really necessary, on my last car, a Trans Am, I didn't have to remove the rear part of the exhaust, so I was just wondering if there is a way to remvoe the driveshaft without having to remove the rear of the exhaust?

if you have the stock exhaust, you'll need to drop it in order to get the d-shaft out.

If this is a 2nd gen car, the u-joints are not replaceable they are sealed in. It's cheaper to get used good driveshaft than to take yours to a driveshaft shop and pay a lot of money for the extra machining plus u-joints.

i just got through removing my exhaust like 10 minutes ago. the u-joint snapped and took part of the yolk along with it. lol. so i had to find a new drive shaft for my car. it was hard b/c mines an automatic... dont hate, i know. but man, after some time i found a guy who had one that was practically brand new. and a little hour and a half trip and i got my driveshaft. i should have everything finished tommorrow if the mazda dealership carries exhuast hangers and gaskets. im retarded and completely folded my brand new one almost in half.

It's probably not any easier, but you can get by with just removing the "Y" pipe instead of the whole exhaust. You will also need to take out 3 or 4 of the rear-most bolts holding the heat shield in place in order to allow your driveshaft to drop down far enough.

yeah you lucky bastards with the original exhaust. i have an apexi N1. so i had to remove it. haha. its ok tho. it wasnt that bad but it was exhausting. mwuahahaha.
