door lock question.

are the door locks on the FC interchangeable? i have a siezed drivers side, and a good passengers, can i switch them or are they side specific?

i believe that you can take the little clip off and swap the "rod pulling" bracket over. That's the only side specific part. The lock mechanism i believe is the same.

Well, aside from opening and closing in the wrong direction but whatever.

I'm not positive, but it looks like it would be a bit harder than just that to switch them around... when i took my drivers side handle out, it looked like there were a lot of side specific parts... But i guess i could be wrong :-/

For all the work....

For all the work it takes to remove two door panels and 2 locks and then ending up with a worn one on the door that you unlock daily, and a broken lock on the 'back-up' door, seems like a bad idea to just swap them;)

When you figure all of the time and effort, plus the fact that your last working lock could break at any time, my recommendation is head down to Mazda and by a new one! They are simple to re-key, did my own in 5 min!

Here in Canada it cost me $65 for a brand new unit, in the US probably even less, and given that the newest of the second gens are now 12 years old, why even bother with a used lock.

sorry to raise the dead, but i found out that i'm going to have to buy a mazda lock. i haven't called them, but the last time i ordered OE parts i nearly had to sell my liver!

Hey projekt, I think that you have made the best choice, it's got to be cheaper then Canada!

This is from Mazdatrix:

LOCK DOOR LEFT 86-92 76-220B-FB01 $45.31

Sorry to bring back this discussion. What does it take to rekey a lock.? I have a lock on the passenger side door that will not work with the original key. I think the door handle was replaced by the previous owner and he did not keep the original cylinder.

you have to take the entire handle out and take it to a lock shop. there is a number on the cylinder that tells them the key to make for that lock.

As far as trying to swap handles...it's not worth it!
Just go pick up another handle or assembly (whatever you need) from a junkyard.....it's MUCH easier....trust me!

Don't take it to a locksmith!, read my post in this thread instead, really, it's easy!
