Jacked car up, door grinds!!
ok, i was adjusting my coilovers today. I have to use a scissor jack (stock jack) to lift the side up so i can slip a floor jack underneat the car. Now i know when you lift up one side of any car, the body will flex a bit. while i had my car up on one side before i slipped under the floor jack, i opened my door. As i was opening it, i felt and heard it binding. So i open it all the way and close it, just before it shut, the door scraped along the bottom portion of the door frame. I was just wonder, does this happen to anyone else? o, and this was just forward of the door under the front fender. Do the FC bodies really flex this much? i have 90K on the odo so its not way high up there. thanks -alex

whare were you jacking it up from? Is your underbody rusty?
I have had a couple FC's, when jacked up, the door would close w/an odd clunk, but never would hang up like that. |
my underbody doesnt have any signs of serious rust :( i was jacking it just underneath the front fender right in front of the door frame.

i thought it was bad to jack up any car with the doors open, or open them once they are jacked up...but i might just be hearing things

Its just unibody flex, most cars do that on a lift

i have two GXLs a 90 and a 88 nether of them have ever done that and they have ben on jacks alot in ther lifetime

You are under the "frame rail" correct? Yes they will flex to some degree. On my S5 TII I purchased new, never in an accident, will notice a difference in door closing if jacked up on one side.
On pre '86 RX7's you could jack the whole side up under the subframe. eg one jack under the frame placed under the door, would raise both front and rear wheels off the ground. If you tried that with the S4/S5, the jack would buckle the floor and not even raise the rear wheel off the ground. |
Hmm.. my body seems amazingly stiff in my FC. Just the other day I noticed this while jacking it up to install my JIC coilovers. I had the front passenger side wheel fairly high up off the ground, and noticed that my passenger side rear, as well as my drivers side front wheel were off the ground as well. May have something to do with my roll bar and strut bars though.

its absolutly normal, its just body flex. every car does it unless its like a lexus or some type of nice SUV. jack up any car from pretty much any side and it will do the same thing

The easy solution is to buy a floor jack and lift it front (subframe) and back (differential.)
