Pull the driveshaft and trans. Hope you have an impact gun to get the flywheel nut off :)

and DONT use a 12 pt socket, haha, well, you can, but, the local shop around here fucked my shit up using one.... im so pissed

It is not entirely necessary to remove the flywheel. Yes it should be removed if it is out of tru and then have it machined but it is not entirely necessary. And yes a good mechanic would remove the flywheel and cut a tenth of an inch off.
I would say it definatly has to be removed if you, "A", hear the rivits sqreetching into the flywheel, or "B" you get nasty chattering. You could purchase the flywheel locking tool from Mazdatrix. that would help you out. Or rent an impact wrench and air tank. |
Good luck... Millertime (hope you have some)
There are a LOT of opinions on this subject...
Search the forum with 'clutch' grab a beer (maybe 2) and some munchies 'cause there is a lot to be read on this one. But the answer to you question is: No, just the trans, exhaust and driveshaft. |
Three and a half months ago me and a good friend changed out my clutch and flywheel. We did this with my car on blocks which probably only raised it about a foot. It's an '89 T2. T2 trannys are heavier so get ready by doing push-ups and a few bench presses. :D We did it this way because we didn't have the option of pulling the engine.
Just remove the exhaust from the turbo on back. Remove the I/C, driveshaft, shifter, etc. to make for a clean removal. Dropping it is easy, putting it back up is harder. The tranny is about 125# or so and I had to hold it still while my buddy aligned it. I'm only 5'10" at 170# and not that strong but it was possible. It took about 8 hours from start to finish. We hit a few snags here and there, but nothing major. The flywheel was a pain. 6 feet of angle iron to lock it down and a long breaker bar to loosen it with a big ol' socket. If you're going to do this much work, you might as well go all out and throw in a 9.5# flywheel. You'll love it (I sure do). Good luck. jerk_racer@hotmail.com |
