Do I Need A New TPS???

I adjusted my TPS to what it should be, and it ended up worse than before. Before the idle would hop all the time, and there was no hesitation.

After i adjusted it, the car drove good the idle was steady, but i noticed that there was alot more hesitation, only when im driving at a steady pace though, not when im accelerating. The next day however, i went to turn the car on and it was going from 900 RPM to 1700 RPM, after i drove the car and warmed up the engine it would even out to 1500 RPM and be steady. (I didnt adjust my idle speed yet)

When i adjusted the TPS i set it to 1000 Ohms resistance, or pretty damn close to that mark, but once i did that i went to WOT, the meter didnt give a reading. Does this mean im going to need a new TPS?

could possibly be a bad TPS. hook up the ohmmeter and do a sweep of the TPS. push the tps plunger in slowly to find any dead spots and let it out flowly. If your meter goes blank of jumps around alot, then the tps is bad.

So i did what you siad, and the meter was really erratic, it was jumping all over the place. This car is getting expensive...the joys of motoring.

idk what to tell you.. but thats a great link aswell to do your tps correctly
its not 1000 ohm. its .95-1.00

Before you toss the TPS, try cleaning it.

Spray the contact cleaned in, work the plunger, blow it out.
Then spray in some of the contact lube.

Then retest the TPS.

You get the same setting either way.
1000 ohms disconnected gives the same setting as 1 volt connected.

Yeah ill give that contact stuff a try. The cars idle is good when the car is warm, but when i start it up and its cold it keeps reving itself. The idle changed by itself today, i havent changed anything, but since i checked the plunger, the car will idle at 1000rpm when its warm and before i checked the plunger it would idle at 1500 when warm. How does that work??

The TPS is only one issue here.
When you get it to show a smooth sweep on the meter, and get it set, you still may have to find & fix a vac leak.

Also the thermo-wax fast idle cam adjustment may be a bit too high.

Also try to use another multi-meter for redundancy. I have 1 that refuses to give good readings during the pettle sweep test, it is just to slow and bouncy. I used another nicer multimeter and could do the test fine as long as your assistant knows to press down very slowly.

What numbers am i looking for when i do the sweep.

Should sweep steadily from 1.0 to 5.0-6.5 (1000 to 6500) and not have any spots in the sweep where it jumps abnormally. If at WoT it goes much higher than 5 you need new tps.

rfc_13 02-03-06 05:28 PM

yeah i think i need a new one because when i do the sweep it goes from 1000 down to like 200, close to WOT it start to move up then it goes off the scale, i dont get a reading. I will take it off a clean it before i get a new one. Also how to I go about adjusting the thermo-wax fast idle cam?
