do I have LSD or not

my car is a 87 sport

when UI dump at 3500 or so I leave two tire marks and even so when I shift rounding out at 7600 rpms

the car will pull to the right though when shifting into scond

in the rain I think both tires start spinning as well and once again pulling to the left

though if I jack the car up and turn one wheel twords the front of the car the other wheel goes in a different direction.

and in a turn it seems that the inside wheel wants to start spinning?¿?

WTF

rico05 06-22-02 04:49 PM

The Sport had an LSD, I am pretty sure.

dre_2ooo 06-22-02 04:54 PM

Doesnt matter if you have a LSD or not, both tires will spin w/o traction reguardless.

If they spin opposite ways when off the ground, then sorry, you don't have and LSD :( If only one can spin, then you do.

adamlewis 06-22-02 05:21 PM

If you do a burnout on dry pavement and you leave two marks its an LSD.

If its an open diff, power would go to the tire that doesnt get traction.

Im not sure what youre talking about dre ... ... I think you got it backwards there bud

knight1976 06-22-02 05:44 PM

I know what your talking about dre. Basically he is saying if you jack up the rear end and spin a tire(by hand) and the tire on the other side turns in the opposite direction then you have an open differential. If you do the same to a LSD diffy then the tires should both spin in the same direction.

adamlewis 06-22-02 05:52 PM

Oh oh oh oh! I see. I thought he was just talking about two different things.

Just kinda weird how he posted it I guess.

Now that I read the whole post ( I just got as far as him leaving two marks ) its also displaying open diff charecteristics... i.e. the one tire spinning in the opposite direction, and his inside wheel wanting to spin while cornering.

bigfish13515 06-22-02 06:33 PM

i have a 91N/A coupe and no matter what rpm i dump the clutch at (the highest i have done it at is around4500) i never leave any tire marks, and hear no squeal or chirp. is there something wrong with mine??? the only times that my tires spin is when it is raining out :(

Turbo Timmy 06-22-02 06:43 PM

Not true... put one tire on concrete and the other one in dirt and if both spin you have (working) lsd.
My 86 with open diff would smoke both tires on even dry asphalt.

Well i dont know what you all are doing but open differentials transfer power to the wheels that lose traction. No debating that ... thats just how they work.
Thats why youll spin the inside tire while cornering.

All open diffs Ive delt with will only spin one tire.

JOTALUV1 06-22-02 07:10 PM

IF YOU JACKED YOUR REAR TIRES OFF THE GROUND AND SPUN ONE TIRE THE OTHER TIRE SHOULD GO THE OTHER WAY IF YOU HAVE LSD. IF THEY OTH SPIN THE SAME WAY THEN YOU HAVE AN OPEN DIFF. OR YOU COULD DO THE GRASS AND CONCRETE TEST.

dre_2ooo 06-22-02 08:10 PM

GODDAMNIT!!

ON THE FUCKIN JACKS:

if they spin opposite directions... it's an OPEN DIFF.

If only one spins.. it's LSD.

lol Im sorry man :titty: I take it all back :D

Uhm, actually the FC LSD will spin opposite directions, it's a clutch type LSD, meaning it locks both tires when the differential is spun fast enough, so by turning it by hand it will turn the opposite direction. To find out for sure, crawl under the car and look at the differential, the LSD's had a little tag on the drain plug. This is what I've found by searching, and I found it to be true on both LSD's I own. Go search :)

Only if it is worn out. If it is not worn out, both wheels will travel the same direction when the car's rear end is jack up and you spin one wheel.

BTW: LSD on a Sport was a factory option. although in some parts of the country it was very common, the majority of sports did not come with LSD.

Gefunk 06-23-02 09:00 AM

Yes thank you sonic rat. Acutually throwing the car on jacks and spinning the tires won't yeild you any true answers. THe only way to do it is get one tire on tarmack, and the other on concrete, dump the clutch if you look down at the one on concrete and it is moving no where while the one on tarmack is pushing you, oops no LSD. Just go under the car, use some deepcreep and a rag, spray the shit outa the diff plug and see if it has a mattalic tag that says lsd....much like my 89 GXL :D

SonicRaT 06-23-02 09:02 AM

That doesn't mean it's worn it, it's not meant to do it while just turning the tires, it was designed to lock up under load.

Icemark 06-23-02 09:18 AM

which is applicable to the fluid type but not the clucth type

SonicRaT 06-23-02 09:40 AM

Damnit I need sleep, too much reading today. Mine seems to lock up under load but not when i turn by hand, and I don't believe I have a viscous. Ahh well, I'm wrong, doh! :)

I'll make it easier:

If you have a series 4 car that means it is worn, it should turn the same load or no load. In your case it still sounds good, but it is gettiung borderline.

if you have a series 5 car that is normal, the engagement is much slower.

SonicRaT 06-23-02 10:03 AM

I have a series 5 ;)

rxspeed87 06-24-02 12:31 PM

with the inside wheel spinning that is what I am guessing
not for sure though
it almost seems to get the inside wheel to start then I get carried away and they both start making noise :D

and why is it the rear pushes hard to the left when the tires start to spin

and so if I put one of my tires on grass or something with little grip and the other tire of the road and spin the tire on grass open diff if I spin the tire of the road I have lsd

and as for the jacking up method I know that works for a lsd in good shape which I am sure after 174k miles it would be worn but I had the car up anyway so I tried it
though I also heard that you can jack up only one rear whee, and leave other on the ground and see if you can spin it.. not sure if it works but hey

rxspeed87 06-24-02 12:33 PM

also how is it I am spinning both my tires when I take off and shift gears?

I thought only one would spin
forogot if I asked in the last post but why does the rear push to the right when I shift and take off hard?

WTF

I owned an RX7 Sport -- bought it new in '86. The RX7 Sport (both '86 and '87) did not come factory equipped from Mazda with an LSD. The LSD was not available as a factory option either. If your '87 Sport has LSD, than somebody other then Mazda put it in.

You wrote:

That is how an open differential behaves.

On a LSD, both wheels will turn in same direction (unless the clutch plates are shot).

The only cars that came factory equipped with LSD during '86-'88 were the TII and '88 GTU (w/ hard suspension). The only cars that came factory equipped with LSD during '89-'91 were the TII and limited priduction "GTUs" model. Also, early 2nd had clutch type LSD and late 2nd had viscous type LSD.
