Do i have an LSD?

First of all did all turbos come with an LSD?

How do i know if i have one? Theroretically, if i have the car on hoists, and turn one wheel, the other should turn a little. Well, i tried that out and it didn't work!!

Is there any other difference in non-LSD and LSD models? Or could it be a fault with my LSD?

If you have a TII you have an LSD unless they swaped it somehow.

Black13B 06-11-03 09:24 AM

LSDs can wear out

s4 GXLs all had an LSD stock, and i would imagine the TIIs did too (as Santiago backed that idea up..)

heres a video of me testing my LSD
http://members.rogers.com/thecheat/lsdtest.avi

notice the passenger side wheel while i spin the d/s wheel.. pay close attention especially at the end..

Yes they did...as posted in the FAQ what came with a factory LSD

all 86-88 GXL (didn't matter if it was an auto or a manual tranny)
all 87-91 T2
the 88 GTU
and the 89-90 GTUs model

See nothing about auto tranny GXL's not coming with a LSD. The S4 GXL all came with LSD regardless of tranny.

Mark I have an Auto 88 GXL and it doesn't have the tag thingie. How else can I check it is an LSD? I don't want to put it on stands but if that is the only way.

Here's the 88:

It doesn't mean that your diff hasn't been replaced or that the tag was lost.

The easiest way is to jack up the rear end and turn. On the S4s the LSD will engage pretty quick if it is not worn out (or the LSD additive for the gear oil was not used). if there is an LSD both wheels will turn the same direction. if there is not an LSD or it is worn out, the other wheel will turn in the opposite direction of the one you are turning.

BTW: that test will not work on a S5

you have a worn out LSD

1987RX7guy 06-11-03 10:32 AM

Can you fix them?

Dan H 06-11-03 10:32 AM

Just curious, how much will it cost to rebuild a worn LSD from an S4 GXL?

ViperKillerWannabe 06-11-03 11:21 AM

Mazdatrix sells replacement units for ~$400 new. I don't know about rebuild kits tho...

Black13B 06-11-03 12:10 PM

you could probably rebuild it.. it likely would not be cheap though..
