Do 2nd gens have heat shields above the cat?
My shifter gets hella hot when I'm driving, especially in hot weather. What I do know is that I'm missing some of those rubber boot shroud things, which I've already ordered from Mazdatrix. But is my 1987 non-turbo manual supposed to have a heat shield of some kind above the catalytic converters? Because air is blowing in that's WAY too hot to be intended for the cabin. My empty stereo bay gets to 160 F on a normal basis, and I don't like it. Anyone who can clue me in would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!

Yes there is both upper and lower heat sheilds on the stock cats and most of the exhaust.
without the boots solid you can have a lot of hot air run in anyway though, even with the heat sheilds |
Also check under the shifter boot, you should have an pad to help that exact problem. Mine did not have it so i ordered one from the mazda house for 3 bucks = ). actually though you could put any type of isulation under there and it will help alot, just pack it in tight helps keep the heat from rising up into the cockpit.
If you really want it solved though take the converter off and just run the precats if you can get away with it at the sticker place. |
Alrighty then... Does that excessive heat damage the rubber boots? Because I don't want to put in the ones I ordered if the heat's going to just destroy them because there's no heat shield. Would anyone happen to have any such heat shield they might be willing to sell, or even give me out of the goodness of their rotary hearts???:)

*inhaling the intoxicating aroma of rotary BBQ*
Yummy! Smells almost as good as those exhaust fumes wafting out of that scorch-marked hole on top of my cat!:D J-Rat: That's awesome man. How much do you want for them? And did you get my email about confirming your prices for the shroud and waterpump? Anyone ever dealt with Meinecke Discount Mufflers before? Because their cat is on my car, and it's got a burn mark from what appears to be an exhaust leak less than a year later. I hope their warranty will cover that. I've read from others on this forum that rotaries run much hotter than pissed-on engines :piss: and that therefore a normal aftermarket catalytic converter won't last as long. Can anyone make any recommendations? |
Yeah, I got the email. I just didnt have time to take the pics. I will take them tomorrow.
