Diy Swap Vs Shop Swap???

1991 vert N/A to TII swap -- Should I do the swap myself or pay to have it done??? shop says it will be $2200 and the motor i bought, nothing else needed they will use a us harness and a haltech computer and make it work with all stock gauges except boost gauge will be added...will tune it on the dyno...OR I could do the swap myself and then bring it to have it tuned...did most of you guys have to tune it after you used the stock turbo ECU??? because if you don't have to tune it then I'll do it myself and save the $2200 for :shocking: upgrades like suspension ect. they have me confused because they said I may have to change the secondary injector(didn't tell me why). I don't want to do the swap myself and then have problems with it running properly and have to take it to them anyway to be tunned (they say around $600-$800) for 2 hours for tunning and dyno... any suggestions???:Wconfused

if you have these questions, you should take it to a shop.

Which shop are you planning on going to?

If you use US TII harness, should be plug and play, no need for the haltech. You will need US TII accel cable. What are you doing about the trans? Did it come with your swap?

I found T&R racing http://www.rx7s.com/ through a friend...I wanted to do it myself as a project car and learn by researching and reading so I could tackle future upgrades...I was into building motorcyles but now I'm moving up to cars

yes I have the tranny too from the TII...and I ordered the mazdatrix modified driveshaft...

88RXVERT 01-24-08 11:01 AM

You didnt need that overpriced driveshaft, you can use a driveshaft from an automatic FC, if you are sticking with your current diff, unless you already have LSD, then the turbo II driveshaft would bolt right up. I ran mine like that with no problems at all, but I switching to the LSD (today infact) diff for the lower gears.

I think you can do it the swap, just study up first. $2200 is too high....$1200 for the swap is more like it...but your in NY where cigs are $8.00 per pack ...so I guess $2200 aint bad.

Roen 01-24-08 11:08 AM

um......if you can use the driveshaft from an auto FC to connect a turbo tranny to a nonturbo LSD, i think other people would have done that by now. I've personally never heard of this done. Can anyone else comment? Otherwise, I'm just going to chalk that up to an excited poster.

non-turbos had LSD also, so no, the TII driveshaft would not bolt right up, it would if he had a turbo rearend, but I don't think he does.

At least the paintjob looks good.

these are the items on my list that I need to do the swap and begin driving TII engine and transmission, driveshaft, accelerator cable, boost control sensor from TII, RB exhaust, wlbro 255 fuel pump, intercooler (don't have TII hood yet so I have to move intercooler), act street clutch, and 2 days without my wife nagging me!!!

I was surprised myself. It works, bolts right up, yolk slides right in. I drove it like that for a long time, turbo II trans, reg NA rear diff and automatic fc driveshaft.

Cars in the shop today going to the TII LSD & TII driveshaft, only for the 4:10 and lsd. Not due to problems with the setup.

88RXVERT 01-24-08 11:26 AM

If I remember correctly.... I learned about it on this board.

Roen 01-24-08 11:29 AM

Interesting..........................

Ok, so the NA lsd has a differant bolt pattern then the TII LSD? If so...my bad.

Roen 01-24-08 11:44 AM

different sizes....NA's were 7 inch while TII's were 8 inch.

1991rx7vert 01-24-08 11:48 AM

does the boost sensor come on the engine????

Omixeo 01-24-08 12:06 PM

The automatic FC's still had the same NA rear-end as the rest of them, so using the driveshaft from it will not work with a TII rear-end and tranmission. Someone must have lied to you or sold you something different.

Roen 01-24-08 12:12 PM

I think he's using a TII tranny to NA rear-end......puzzles me too.

1991rx7vert 01-24-08 12:12 PM

cant find a boost sensor on ebay... any suggestions???

Yes thats right, TII trans to NA diff, w/ Automatic FC driveshaft. I almost bought the Mazdatrix one, then someone on this board mentioned that the AT would fit, so I went on eBay to find one and sure enough 915 racing had one up for auction and even mentioned in the auction that it would work for the TII trans to NA rear end. Worked like a dream, although I did switch (today) to TII LSD and driveshaft and it is nicer in corners and both tires burn rubber now!:icon_tup:
