disassembling shocks

fellas i got my shocks off and i have the spring compressed but for the life of me i can't get the damper bolt to come loose. when i turn the bolt the entire unit turns, bump stop and piston. i have a haynes manual which tells me to jam a prybar inbetween the mounting bolts but the shocks have the bolts right across from each other. its probably a real simple fix but i can't figure it out. appreciate the help

you should have loosened it before you removed it.....

other than that I cant help you

you're going to have to use an impact gun on it.

i popped the assembly back into the fender and i still get the same result. center spins and the bolt wont loosen.

Impact wrench or a big pair of visegrips on the chrome shaft. Only use the visegrips if you are replacing the inserts for obvious reasons.

In addition to what he said, if you put some cloth around the shaft, and vice grip it waaaaay up high, then you should be able to avoid damage to the shaft.

like everyone else just impacting the struts makes for a way easier removal and installation...
