Disableing the dummy locks
 

Hey guys I searched around a bit but didn't find anything. I want to disable the mechanism in the door lock system so that I don't have to hold the handle up to lock it anymore. If nothing else at least on the passenger side because I'm tired of explaining how to lock my car to people over and over.
My stupid ex never could figure it out.

Anyone done this?

That mechanism is there so you don't accidentally lock your keys in your car. Just lock the pass. side from the inside once passenger gets out then lock your door with the key on the outside, problem solved.

Replace your passengers.

WTF every Japanese car I've ever driven has this feature. Who doesn't know about this?

all my friends dont know either, and i also have to explain EVERY time how to lock the door.

old 80s cars have it.. i had a 92 240sx that didnt have it,.. when i replaced the whole door with one from a 89, it had that feature, so i never figured out how to remove it, just left it.

But yeah id like to remove it as well.

1SWEET7: And fuel cuts are there to keep you from boosting over 8 psi but everyone disables them right?
I know why it's there But I'm not retarded and I keep a spare key in my wallet so even if I did lock my keys in I just whip out the spare.

Now again can anyone tell me how to disable it?

no one really knows or its never been posted.. perhaps you will have to just take off the handle and figure it out one day.

Doesn't seem like it would be that complicated. I have a door handle sitting in the back of one of my FCs, and the door panel is off so I'll poke around and try to figure it out tomorrow.

Apparently your passengers are.

Every car I get out of, I hold the handle up while I lock it... I've owned many cars that don't have this feature.

My Girlfriend's 1998 Accord, My 1996 Honda Passport SUV, 1993 Civic, My mom's 1996 Civic, My 1989 Ford Tow truck... Lots of cars that don't have it, yet it's still reflex action to hold the handle while I close the door...

How old are your passengers? If they're younger than the car, I think I know why they don't understand this.

Interesting thread. I'm going to watch how it turns out and maybe disable my passenger side handle if it's something simple.

I've driven Mazdas since 1986 and have probably wasted several months of my life trying to explain the locking procedure to passengers over the years, then just ended up having to go over and do it for them myself. I think Mazda was one of the few makers to put this on their cars in the 80s; my friends' Hondas didn't have this. Nissan might have, but now I forget.

As far as it actually helping to keep you from locking your keys in the car, it doesn't really do that anyway. Once you get into the habit of holding up the handle every time you get out, it's just as easy to lock your keys inside as in any other car. The one time I locked my keys in a car was in my old 1980 GLC wagon, and luckily you could pop the locks quite easily with a coat hanger.

Hondas have it slightly modified.

My 1985 Civic 4wd Wagon and my 1993 Civic Sedan had it so that you couldn't lock the door unless you held the INSIDE handle open.

On my wife's '01 Integra, you could only lock the driver's door from outside with the key, but you could lock the passenger side without holding any handles. Like the OP, I think the problem is not so much with the driver's door because you know how it works, but rather with having to train and re-train your passengers. Even repeat passengers, like my wife, who is not a fan of the RX-7 anyway because "you have to sit on the floor."

get an alarm system that locks / unlock the door

well i might as well try to be constructive. i dont think this "feature" is in the door handle.

im betting it has to do with the locks where the door closes. or it might be where the lock/unlock thing is.

this would probably be the easiest solution.

Well... If you haven't tried have the passenger shut the down, and you shut yours. The key should lock both sides when you have the door closed. At least my car I can open/lock both from the driver side. No need for them to do any thing but shut the door.

im sure its probably as simple as removing a lever arm that is attached to the lock and door handle

my 2004 honda civic has this feature from the factory, well similar anyways you have to hold the handle up to lock the door but you can close it without holding the handle.

I tried figuring it out earlier, but I managed to lock myself in the car, so I gave up. :lol:
