difference between s4 and s5 turboII rear axles???
 

i am pretty sure i have an s4 turboII rear end and i want to know if the only axles that will fit are 86-88 turboII axles. will s5's fit the same? i only ask because i am not entirely sure i have an s4 rear end....but there even much of a difference between s4 and s5 rear ends? or are all of the above mentioned the same parts respectively?

Fitment of TII half shafts and 3rd members are the same between S4 and S5. Just be sure what you have IS a TII 3rd member. Otherwise, a whole different answer.

the s4 is a clutch type LSD, the s5 a viscous type. dunno about the axels though

yeah im like 98% sure its the s4 clutch type....any way to check without tearing it open? any numbers or markings that would help me tell? and i know the non turbo shafts are a fraction of a hair longer than the tII's. hehehehe found that out the hard way....needless to say just didnt want to buy axles that were not gonna fit.

by the way any place anyone could recommend to get a pair of axles? thanks for the help everyone.

the cluch type should be marked as use only gl5 hear oil and may also say something about limited slip additive if the marking is still there,

the viscous type can use any gear oil so I would immagine there to be no marking.

they are interchangeable.

The S4 halfshalfs need to be used with the S4 3rd member. I tried swapping the S4 3rd member onto my JDM S5 FC and the halfshafts are just a hair longer. The fitment is way too tight, had to "force" it on (might end up breaking the halfshafts when driving). Hope this helps.
