Diff mount...?
 

How hard is it to change the diff mount??? I have rebuilt 2 rotaries before, and I know alot about electronics and wiring, but I have never messed with any part of drivetrain before (execpt for replacing clutch, etc.) But I was wondering how hard of a job it'll be? And if it is possible to skip the mount, and weld the diff to the car.

you dont have to, but I'd reccomend it. You need at leased 2 jacks. its fun, but more than a weekend job unless you have perfect weather, all the tools and work well into each night.

Nope. I was able to change my diff mount without dropping the subframe completely. I loosened it up a bit and had to pry it down. From there I used a few extensions and a swivel socket, ended up working out alright.

If you need it done in 1 day/night do this method. If you have a couple days to do it dropping the subframe would make things easier for removal/installation, but in my opinion harder overall.

Damn...ok, so I am assuming that it would be alot easier if I use a lift... Guess I am visiting my friend tomorrow.. (My best friend is a mechanic at autohaus, so sometimes when I really need to I get to use their lifts.)

a day? to change a diff mount? It can be done in about 3 to 4 hours easy...

I did mine in about 2 hours without dropping the subframe, just had to pry it down with a piece of 2''x4'' and some really long extensions. (Of course this was the second time I'd done it. The frist time I took about 4 hours.)

Wouldn't recommend welding it for a DD. Its just like anything, gets easier with experience.

My first time doing it, I did it on my own and it took me around 8 hours of labor, dropping the whole sub-frame.


With a helper i'm sure I could have done it in ~6 or less. WTF is taking you all weekend and more? :confused:

I personally don't work 8 hours straight usually.

When I quoted 1 night/day, I meant one night/day of about 2-3 hours of work without dropping the subframe.

When I quoted a couple days with dropping the subframe, I meant 2 days of working 4 hours or so each day. Like, day 1 you drop the subframe and change the mount and call it good. Day 2 you put the stuff back together.

Some people don't have 8 hours to spare in any single day, at least I don't in my life. I'm usually lucky lately to spare 2-3 hours in a day to do something.

Some times I have nothing to do on a weekend ;) Wake up 10am and work till 2pm, break for lunch. Hit it again at 3pm and work till 9pm.

I used to be able to do that, a long long time ago... It was pretty nice, but I no longer have that kind of time. Between the rx7, rx8, school, work, my gf, and TRYING to find time to be with friends, the day just runs out much too fast.

Point being, the diff mount replacement is not very hard and dropping the subframe is definitely not needed. However, replacing the mount itself is much easier once the subframe is out of the way, most definitely, but the overall job will take longer with dropping it.

Yea, i'd say if you have a buddy or two of them and air tools you can do it sub 6 hours easy. Buy some beer to attract the buddies and lure them into working for joo.
