did someone unturbo my car???

Ok I'm new and i know ill post some pretty stupid questions, but anyways, i recently purchase an 87 Rx7.
When i looked up the VIN it said it was a turbo II, but when i found the car it was advertised as just as a NA. upon further inspection i liked the car and it had just had a rebuild on the engine, i have the reciepts as proof. it runs great but needs some work. in the car fax report it did say that it had been in an accedent. I was wondering if somone had either replaced the engine with a nonturbo or if it was possible that they just removed the turbo from the motor that was in there due to damage to the turbo system. i havent had a chance to check the VIN on the block to see if it is the original engine, but i have noticed quite a few harness connectors, and mounting points in the enige bay that are hooked to anything. the mounting points looked like they once had something there that is no longer. The VIN in the window and everywhere on the body do match. I was also wondering where the VIN on the block is, how i could tell if this was a nonturboed engine.

thanks in advance! and i hope i dont get lit up too badly on this one!

well, the engine won't have a VIN. it will have serial number somewhere. I'm not sure about RX7 resources, but you can get the serial number of the engine and find out which trim level it came in from the factory. You really won't be able to find out which car specifically, but you should be able to tell what year, trim level, and region it came from.

if the car has an intercooler on the top you know its a turbo motor with the turbo taken off.... if not they its an n/a more than likely.... look at the wiring harnesses in the engine bay all the way to the ecu and such and see if the wires have been cut... this will help tell if the motor has been replaced with a different one (n/a to turbo)... also pull up the carpet on the pass side and look at the ECU.. the n/a ecu's are numbered n326, n327, and if its a conv then it wouldnt have been turbod to begin with "stock" but either way that would be a n333. thats all i can think of right now but there are plenty of other ways to tell if its been converted... also do you have a boost guage? if so then you know.. if not then that might have also been replaced... also that shell might be a TII shell with a wrecked n/a swapped into it... its 17 years old man theres no telling lol.. good luck with that

If I recall correctly, Carfax mislists a lot of non-turbo RX-7's as Turbo II's.

thats true, alot of VIN's i ran though said they were turbo's when they were actually n/a's, glitch in the system i guess..

doesn't it go like FC331 is n/a and FC332 is turbo? you can run a FC331 number through and it has a chance of showing turbo on the car fax.
