did I overheat, is engine damage possible?

Ok heres the deal I have no fan shroud and my cluster is shot so I have no temp guage. I was driving for about 20 minutes, the last ten of which were in really slow stop and go traffic and the car started backfiring and sputtering like crazy when I hit 4k in any gear, SO i pull over and pop the hood, i pulled the egi fuse so may e-fan would run and waited like 15-20 minutes. The car ran fine from then on and i never hit traffic again. I saw my ar overheat once before and coolant sprayed from the hose/rad connection. That didnt happen this time. Did I over heat? WHat possible damage can be done by overheating?

1) Get an Autometer Temp gauge and put it in a a-pillar pod or on the dash or something.. its more accurate than stock anyway.

2) if your e-fan doesn't have a shroud, your farting in the wind.. get a black magic 150 or 180 or a vintage air monsterfan with a custom shroud (i think its for a 68-69 camaro that works)

3) More than likely, you were overheating, I'm not sure if the stock ECU has a built in fail safe, but I think it does.. My haltech is set to go superrich of the water temp gets too hot or the coolant sensor takes a crap.. can't imagine that the stock ecu wouldn't have something like this

4) if you started the car up after it cooled down and everything was hunkey-dorey.. probably OK....

Usually, when the car overheats and something takes a crap.. its the water seal o-rings that take the crap and you either get white smoke all the time... or, after the car sits and cools, coolant gets into the housings and its harder than hell to start. in both cases, even when there is no smoke, the exhaust will smeel sweet, like antifreeze.

Dude, get a temp gauge...

That's like flying an airplane without an altimeter, lol...

Well i smelled a weird smell but it wasnt burning antifreeze, im familiar with that smell and there was no smoke. Im buying a megan racing guage in a day or 2 and also getting the fan shroud. Its running fine now. Also to clarify I have the stock clutch fan and the stock optional e-fan. Its supposed to come on at a certain temp but when I pull the egi fuse it runs.
