Dash problems

Ok I know that the dash removal is posted many times and its also in the fsm, which I have, but Im having trouble with the 3 top screws. ok I removed all the vents( which broke), and I removed the center screw. Someone said it was a 1/2" bolt but its actualy a 5/16". Now when I removed all that I couldnt seem to find the other 2. all I see are 2 philip screws on each side, where the bolts supposedly go. The screw holds down a plastic piece which I broke so I know thats not whats keeping the dash from coming out. O I have an 88 vert. Is the dash removal different for verts?? Im still scratching my head PLease HElp..

ok people sorry for the question I figured it out right away after I hit my head with the dooy on the way out. Since I had the dash out I decided to take out all the ac equipment. wow was that disgusting. There was that nasty black dust along with crusty pieces of foam. I couldnt believe I was actualy breathing all that. I think that cleaning of the a/c should be a regular maintenance that should be completed around every 10 years. Anyway, I removed everything. I havent driven my car for almost a year, but I could remember that the instrument cluster and the switches rattled alot while driving and made my commute annoying. Is there anyway to stop that, or do I need to install another dash ?

Well anyways im tired and I still cant believe I completed a dash and a/c removal at 4 in the morning.

those top screws, use a good ratchet on them, there are a total of between 9 to 11 bolts that hold the dash. i recommend once you pull it all out, depending where you live. since i am in florida, the sun beats down on it really bad, i pulled it, sanded it down very lightly, painted it with a UV protection flat coat. after i used a semi gloss clear, bad boy shines, like on armourall, but the shine aint as bad as you think, no glare off the windshield

hmm half inch? 5/16? should these bolts be metric like the rest of the car?

MARTIN Mar 24, 2004 03:35 PM

aka_rocket Mar 25, 2004 04:43 AM

hey, um...hopefully you got the dash out. i just did it last week so i'll say what i did and hopefully it helps a little. the top pieces, with the vents, since you broke those vents then i guess that it for them. now the center screw, that's the only thing you need to get off now. now the metal piece cover the dash, the piece that the vents were screwed onto. use a flat and hopefully not scratching anything, pry the piece off the dash. they should pop off. its held in with metal so just pop it off, sliding the flat across the dash. once you have that metal piece off, kinda pull if up and wiggle it sideways up onto the a pillar and window. this part is tricky. you will see the three main screws that connect top of the dash to the car. i think those are 10mm. the side vents (by the door) you can pry them off with a flat as well. please be careful though since RX-7 plastic is so freakin weak. once you get those off, you will see two screws, undo those. undo for both sides then by the centerpiece, you see the little plastic piece you can take off. a little piece of carpet covers the last two screws. get those off and your done. just lift wiggle and tilt and pull out. all this assuming you've got the cluster and steering wheel and such off. oh, wire wise, there are two on the driver side (color blue) and one under the glove compartment (blue also). i might have missed a wire but yea, that should get the dash off. then you have the hoses too. remember where each goes. i forgot to put some AC hoses in before i put the dash back in. that REALLY freakin sucked for me...but i fixed it. hope this helps.

oh yea, the vert is the same. i did my 86 gxl first since i wasn't sure how. then i removed my 91 vert's dash also(needed the temperature actuator for my AC system). only took me less then 20 minutes. it really is easy, just afraid to break those weak plastic.
