Damn Damn Damn Starter

Well i have been noticing for the last couple of days that my 88 vert cranks slow. Well its gradually been getting worse. Well I just wrote it off to a bad battery. Well today I got get a brand spanking new Optima battery, and guess what still does it :( Well I regrounded the motor and the battery to the frame same thing. Just went out there just now and I get 'click, click, click' Guess I got a bad starter?

I think our cars get jealous when you pay too much attn to another Rx. I have been spending money on my 85 and i guess its pissed at me!

If it is a bad starter, I got one for sale! $30 shipped! Clean, and works!

Gonna pull it off tonite, I got a friend that rebuilds them and does an awesome job. i have had him do 3 w/o any problems. i would buy it from you, but I need it FAST. Only running car except the 80 and its too rusted for me to drive. :(

Rebuilding the starters on these cars is a breeze. Probably just worn out bushings. OR a bad connection from one of the clutch relays to the starter. You know the ones I am talking about, force you to push the clutch in before starting so you don't start in gear.

My 88 did that to me, had to push start it. Felt kinda foolish when I opened the driver's door and shoved my car out into the straightaway in the parking lot. Push down hill and jumped in. Starter brushes went out AND had a bad connection to starter. Wouldn't "Click" at first, then clicked and didn't start.

Brushes only cost my $20 or so and will probably last the life of the car now.

Mine did the same thing but instead of having it rebuilt I only cleaned it up internally. That was a year ago and its still working fine.

i recently paid $125 for a '79 because the auction
house thought it had a bad starter. well we've heard the story before. i cleaned the battery post until the were shinning like sliver. pulled the -&+ battery connections and sanded them too.
got in turned the key and varoom turned right over. and this was after i bought a starter, good thing i had'nt jacked it up and got greasy and dirty first-things first, iyaseven

Ok now all I need is someone to help me push it in the garage. Its outside and the garage goes uphill :(

Guess I'll tackle it in the morning... Thanks guys...

Is your vert an auto? I pushed started mine for almost a week while I waited for the local parts store to order the brushes for me.

Its a manual... Its kinda different to explain, why i cant get enough speed to push start it.. :) Youd have to see where its parked to understand :) I wish it was as simple as letting it roll down the hill LOL :)

can someone post how to rebuild the starter or a site to go to. Mine doesnt always work and I am sure it is the some bad brushes in the starter. Thanks.

being that I was quoted 40 bucks at a electric motor rebuild shop. Parts are like 25, why mess with it?

By the way just went out there and tapped on it with a small dent hammer. And it started up, Im gonna go riding around, i feel stranded with no car :)
