Cracked exhaust manifold problem or not?

So I just fixed one problem with my LIM now I'm on to the next problem. I gave my buddy Dave my exhaust manifold so he could remove the twin scroll flap and he sent me this picture showing a crack. He said it should be fine he didn't see any sign's that it was leaking. I just want to make sure. The motor is jap and supposed to have low miles so are these cracks normal?

nah, you should be fine. if your super worried about it getting larger you can get it welded.

Alright thanks. I'll see if my buddy wants to hit it up with a little weld.

The S4 divider crack is a common problem with the twin scroll housings. You could get it repaired if you like but i honestly wouldn't worry about it. I havent really read or heard anybody losing a turbo because of this. i may be wrong, I just havent posted on the forums for some time now.

oops, Wrong crack. I would fix that actually. I though you were talking about the s4 turbine housing.

i would replace the manifold or have it repaired correctly. i don't recommend using that manifold as-is.

I already told my buddy not to worry about it and gave it back. So should I give it back to him and have him weld it? What would happen if I did run it with the crack? Am I looking at a leak in the long run or worst?

need-a-t2 06-17-10 04:20 PM

it'll leak eventually, but no harm is going to come from running it as is right now.

The question is: does the crack go all the way through to the inside wall of the manifold? If no - then run it until it leaks, if yes - then weld it (or buy another one).

we had one that almost split in half! if yours isn't that bad you should either toss it, or have it welded up.

it'll start off being an exhaust leak, then it'll get worse and the turbo wont spool anymore...
